Succinctly, the 1/350 scale TOS Enterprise is a go and just announced at Wonderfest.

This is just FREAKIN' AWESOME news for devoted fans of our beautiful lady. :techman::techman::techman:

Apparently you'll be able to build all three versions of the ship as there will be different editions as well as alternate parts available. :techman:

We have been waiting sooo long! Finally!

This is awesome... I just wish they could clue us in a bit more about what the deluxe version has to make it $150.00...

As I understand this version will allow you to build any of the three versions (1st pilot, 2nd pilot or series production) and it will have a lighting kit as well as motor assembly for the spinning nacelle domes.

In other words, you get to build the Master Replicas version model without the painting mistakes made by some poor underpaid Chinese worker...

No, we'll get to make our OWN painting mistakes! ;)

At this scale I'm assuming perhaps openings for existing windows with clear plastic inserts, hmm? And if R2 doesn't offer it then I'm sure someone will aftermarket a hangar deck interior with open bay doors.

I understand the Deluxe edition will be $150 and the Standard edition about $100.

I'm usually a pretty thrifty consumer, but there are occasional exceptions. When the TOS episodes were finally released in dvd sets I couldn't wait (I'd been waiting already for decades) so I ponied up and grabbed them rather than wait. Any other series I've simply waited until they're more reasonably priced.

Now I've never paid more than $100 for a model or even close to that, but this will be an exception. And even the Premiere edition is a bargain compared to the MR replicas. Even with supplies and paint and such you'll still spend far less and also have an even more accurate replica. So if I can sign onto their website and pre-order one then I'll do it. I've been waiting for too damned long.

Of course, if it doesn't happen I'll be quite happy with the standard edition and get the other parts separately. :)

Yea! Glad to hear it's now official. I'll take two, please. Just have to get Mrs.Q2 to look the other way while I punch in my credit card info!

Been waiting too long for this. I hope the wait was worth it.

To be fair, I'm not sure Gene Roddenberry was remotely as technically-oriented as most of us are. Would he have really even NOTICED?

Gene Coon, or Matt Jefferies, or Wah Chang, or John Black, or... well, the list goes on, doesn't it? THEY would probably have noticed.

But I'm not convinced that Roddenberry would even notice the difference in the ship. He, after all, was the driving force in the 1970s behind the idea that the TOS ship design was "inadequate," wasn't he? And he's also the one who thought that the nacelles were "thousands of feet long" and that you could park a "fleet of airliners" inside the Enterprise. Oh yes, and he's also the guy who thought that main engineering should be at the aft centerline of the saucer.

One very nice thing about the PL 1/1000 kit was that it was very affordable and perfect for all those who wanted to do kit bashes and other variants. The 1/350 not so much unless you've got money to burn.

Uh...do we soon start hoping/praying for a 1/350 Klingon D7 companion kit? :D

^ Well this is kind of exactly why I hope that the standard 350 will only leave the lighting stuff out, because when you have a FAR smaller and cheaper kit that does come with the bits to make variants, it really doesn't make sense not to also include that option in the bigger one, considering they obviously know the customers would love it. I can see charging an extra 50 bucks for lighting stuff, but not the other bits.

It'll be interesting to see how this will go together. On a smaller kit points of assembly such as where the engine pylons meet the secondary hull isn't an issue because you're dealing with a small amount of weight for the amount of plastic. But for something this size you're talking about a lot of plastic for the size of those nacelles and pylons. It's got to be a really solid mounting not only to hold them in place but also to keep them aligned properly.

Agreed. Perhaps they'll include a metal armature to hold the thing steady.

If it was just a matter of the ship design, it might be a tossup.

But with the bigger implication of the wannabe being rejected in favor of his version....:techman:

I gave the "whew" whistle of disappointment at the price. Then I remembered that I spent about $300 on buying, lighting, and painting my refit. Of course, that was before I had a wife and child. Still, by the time it comes out I may have saved enough. :D
