Contest: ENTER 08+09/2016: TOS Dreadnought / Carrier

"Hey Franz."
"Yeah?"
"I need a dreadnought."
"A what?"
"A big, creepy dreadnought. You know, because there's this admiral, and he really hates Kirk, and because Kirk is hitting it on with his daughter, and he's going to teach the arrogant prick... so he takes this carrier, and teaches Kirk a lesson in humility. It's going to look awesome!"
"Wait... Do you want a dreadnought or a carrier? I'm confused..."
*shrugs* "Whatever, as long as it looks good."
*sigh* "Sure thing Gene..."

After sketching some stuff I came to the conclusion that making a TOS ship would be the most awesome way to go, especially since making something new and unique in that timeframe can be considered tricky. The resulting ship is planned as being either a carrier or dreadnought; I'm not entirely sure yet which one it will be, or possibly constructed to be both when parts are moved around. The basis will probably be the same regardless.

So here we've got the start. The nacelle is pretty damn large (a bit more than double a Conny's nacelle in width) and even though it's hard to see right now, it ends with a double football. Oh, and it's got revolving warp coil thingies. I heard you guys like moving parts. Plus, coils that spin faster and faster would make for an interesting visual cue that a ship is preparing for warp instead of the lame opening gills of the KelvinPrise.

Constitution nacelle (and ship in the background) for scale, of course.

Not entirely sure about the bussards, but it's WAY more interesting than the standard red sphere.

Nice...but why does this look familiar?? There's something about the bussard collectors. It's awesome really.

That's odd, @publiusr because I (and apparently others) can see the images just fine? They're hosted on Imgur. Have you experienced trouble with that site?

Well @Finn , Hanzhefu's bussards inspired me to do something else with them, so that might be it?

^No. I could have sworn I saw someone use a nacelle with dual bussards like yours and the hull in your second picture before, a while back.

Lol. OK, well for now here's the flightdeck. The "wide" side of the hull (here to the left) will have a capacity of holding at least 32 medium shuttlecraft (think Galileo -type), which leaves the runway completely free as they are all parked in the alcoves. The short side of the hull, which has narrower alcoves, offers room for an additional 16 attack craft. I still have to design these nimble fighters, but if my extrapolation is correct this would mean that instead of 4 medium shuttles, 6 attack craft me be deployed on the wide side in case of heavy fighting, resulting in a total craft count of 64 craft per hull; I think we can call that a super carrier, right?
Per hull? Yeah, if it wasn't obvious yet, this craft will have catamaran hulls, flanking the saucer. Swarm to succeed alright...

In the right of the image you see a walkway. It's suspended by cables, because this can move out of the way to let a larger craft pass from one side of the runway to the other. I was thinking about TOS-ifying Eaves' STXI large shuttle concept (if it would need it at all), which would be ideal for a troop transport, the unholy lovechild of a Galileo and a Danube. I'll have to see how large I can go...

Also: Saucer-thingy. I'd think that having a large, sail-like construction in the back would prove handy for sensors and flight control. Or would that make it too obvious a target? It makes for a great outline though...

I don't know about too big a target, there is a big bridge area right in front of it ;) but I really like the look and feel of this. It's different but still feels very much like a Starfleet ship, especially if you look at the cargo ships versus the starships of that era.

Hmpf. I had to break off the render at 80% anti-aliasing because we're having a power interruption tomorrow. So I'll just leave this here for y'all to comment and criticise.

The line running across the saucer is indeed a separation plane. I'd say that the Dreadnought variant would have a nacelle under the saucer as well, and then the deflector housing would go to the top tower. Also, the wing tips will feature deflector dishes too; with such a wingspan, they're pretty necessary. I'm only doubting if I really need the wing to be so large. But I like the Flying Fortress vibe it gives :)
