Because he hadn't yet met Moogie.
Love does funny things to people. Why does Zek love Moogie? Likely because she's an intellectual equal, and that's incredibly rare in Ferengi society. She can keep up with the best of them.
Moogie likely explained the benefits of reform in terms of economics...
That was literally my first thought upon reading this thread. The (creative) argument made by some characters in this book went along the lines of, because pre-first contact civilizations are allotted neighboring planets to colonize, etc. in the future by the Federation, a pre-warp civilization...
When literally thousands of cube ships are smashing everything in their path to space dust, there's not else to do.
One cube ship wrecked the Starfleet armada at Wolf 359 without breaking a sweat. Now imagine a Borg zerg rush, and keep in mind that they're not stopping to assimilate and stated...
It's like Riker and Ro Laren. Why is Riker a hardass to Ro? Because the plot calls for it in that episode.
Thankfully, the meanness towards Barclay, including from Geordi, goes away after "Hollow Pursuits," and the crew is pleasant towards him, because of the aforementioned bad writing.
One problem with "Hollow Pursuits" is that almost everyone is rude or dismissive of Barclay, in ways that aren't in line with what we've done to expect from their respective characters.
Picard was a bit of a jerk to many people in early seasons. After all, his first reaction to Riker in...
I don't think subspace works like that, such that you could stick your hand into subspace and have it come out somewhere else.
Medical practice also involves psychology and comforting patients. The " human touch," or bedside manner, is part of being a doctor, as the Doctor learns over time.
Danar and the other Angosian war veterans are not really good examples of the dangers of genetic engineering. They were baseline Angosians who were "upgraded" through medical and psychological treatments. Plus, they're the victims of neglect by their government. Their government decided it was...
Because the Federation is a conservative society when it comes to technology.
Innovations like long-distance subspace beaming or using the transporter to reverse aging or cure intractable diseases are used once, forgotten, and never pursued.
Non-biological intelligence research or...
Yep. As progressive as the Federation likes to think it is, it really is quite conservative in practice.
Subspace beaming? Not explored. Manufactured intelligences, like AI or synths? Banned or just not researched in the mainstream. Transwarp? They tried once, with the Excelsior, and then gave...
Ye Olde Litverse had them both join a multi-state pact. IIRC the Gorn were a bit wobbly because their alliance partners looked down on them, so the Federation spent time and effort trying to peel them away.
I'm going to go back and add page numbers, because it seems Cygnus X-1 doesn't support hotlinking. The log entries are worth reading, to see what Trek lore was like in the 1980s.
