Janeway doesn’t resign, she remains a part of Starfleet and helps create the pilot program for the USS Prodigy to be a training ship that will act as an envoy of optimism and diplomacy. If anything, it is showing there is hope for a brighter future even in the face of tragedy.
Jankom Pog explicitly says they are going to re-open the schools in that very scene, it was just a temporary closure. I don’t know what you all are talking about.
On top of that, the series ends with the creation of a training ship program which will generate new officers.
I didn’t get the impression classes were cancelled forever — just until further notice as they get a sense of what is going on. Something similar happened after 9/11 when school classes were canceled that week at a lot of universities/high schools.

I understand the appeal, but the data just doesn’t support that. Netflix has blown away the competition in the streaming wars by several orders of magnitude with an algorithmically refined model of release based on viewership. That is what they continue to do.
As reported by Bob Iger, Disney+ has been struggling with viewer numbers, even on their high end shows, and is trying anything to boost them. To my knowledge, this model has not proven effective.
Like other shows at Netflix, future seasons depend on how the newest one performs. Blue Eye Samurai was the same. It didn’t get renewed for a new season until it had been out for a month or two, according to the Showrunner.
Did you watch the whole season? Most folks say it really hits as the series goes on, characters develop and they learn to become Starfleet cadets. Worth finishing S1, IMO.
