    David Gerrold's Post- Fascinating

Two things: (A.) if you claim Star Trek is about social justice, the fact there are no LGBTQ people in the "regular" universe is a legitimate stick with which you can be beaten; if you really want to argue the franchise is genuinely progressive, you have to acknowledge that; (B.) a lot of...

    Correct me if im wrong

I endorse this comment. And there are a lot of gems in the first two seasons of DS9. Duet has been rightly cited, but what of In the Hands of the Prophets or Necessary Evil? Even Whispers, despite its obvious homages to Phillip K. Dick? I'll also stick up for the last third of the second...

    David Gerrold's Post- Fascinating

How do we define adulthood in an alien species? Even on Earth, eighteen is an arbitrary age set by legislatures. The age of majority differs between countries, for example. At 18, I can drink a beer in Ireland, but not in the United States. Age of consent is equally variable. More than that, do...

    David Gerrold's Post- Fascinating

You don't see any abusive undertones in the way that Neelix treats Kes in episodes like The Phage or Twisted? Where he is incredibly emotionally manipulative and controlling, not to mention passive-aggressive, which becomes extra creepy when you factor in the difference in age between them, the...

    David Gerrold's Post- Fascinating

The "social justice" line is a lovely piece of myth-building. However, it's largely not borne out. That multinational crew? Not Roddenberry's idea. It was added at the behest of the network. The evil network. Look at the way fandom treats Uhura. You would imagine her to be a torch-bearer, a...

    David Gerrold's Post- Fascinating

She was also only two years old. If even. A big part of her character arc is about growing and maturing into adulthood, something that implicit confirms we're meant to view her as an elfin child-like Young woman. (As evidenced be the conscious sexualisation of her in the third season, with the...

Will they go back to primeTrek after nuTrek finishes?.

The TOS characters are the MOST popular and the MOST iconic. Everybody knows Kirk and Spock, not just fans. They have incredible name recognition. To put it another way, do you think the mainstream media would have given the deaths of Jonathan Frakes, Nana Visitor, Robert Beltran or Jolene...

Will they go back to primeTrek after nuTrek finishes?.

Same audience as the Avengers movies or the Nolan Batman movies. Anyone who might be interested, geek or not. The Next Generation was a mainstream show. It got an Outstanding Drama nomination at the Emmy's. It was not a show that pandered to "us geeks." And, again, it seems like "give a...

Will they go back to primeTrek after nuTrek finishes?.

Tsunkatse pandered to a different fan base not to a broader audience. And it was the exception, not the rule. What did Voyager actually do to grow the fanbase? The Next Generation was a pretty cutting age show for the late eighties. However, Voyager just kept fetishing that model of...

Will they go back to primeTrek after nuTrek finishes?.

The spectrum of Star Trek fandom is far too diverse and scattered - not to mention too damned insignificant - to produce a useful and meaningful consensus for the purposes of marketing a movie. These forums should be proof that we can't agree on anything, and any attempt to "average" that would...

    These are the Voyages

Yep, but they were actively friendly with the Klingons at a point where the Empire had several policies that could be described as in contrast with Federation ideals. (Subjugation of entire worlds, refusal to let women sit on the High Council, etc.) The reality is that most governments have...

Writer for Star Trek cartoon, comic strip to be honored

On the ENT blu rays, I recall Garfield Reeves Stevens saying that one of Coto's plans for the fifth season would have been to bring in a writer like Niven to plot a nice sci-fi-y arc for the year. Would have loved to bring Niven full circle on the franchise.

    These are the Voyages

I think the issue was more WHICH worlds they were conquering. The Original Series seems to suggest it's not altruism that motivates Federation concerns about Klingon activity on worlds within the Federation sphere of influence. Coon's scripts are just as cynical about the Federation, while...

Will they go back to primeTrek after nuTrek finishes?.

But surely it's easy to pick examples like that from any franchise? (Off the top of my head, the killing of Kirk in Generations or the racism of Code of Honour.) Isn't the best response simply to go on and just ignore the part you don't like, as Greg has suggested, instead of going back to...

Will they go back to primeTrek after nuTrek finishes?.

To be fair, didn't Superman Returns pretend Superman III and Superman IV never happened? It's not unheard of for studios to pretend that failures simply did not happen. But the definition of "failure" is important here. For this to be relevant to this discussion, you'd need to convince...

Will they go back to primeTrek after nuTrek finishes?.

All joking aside, is the solution to this that everybody should agree with certain aesthetic judgements or be branded "dead wrong and quite dumb"? We may have to agree to disagree.

    These are the Voyages

I thought the ending was the point, though. Like a lot of Enterprise, you can see the team struggling with the idea of post-9/11 Star Trek; you can't just radically undermine a foreign culture, wash your hands clean and walk away. Pretending you can has horrific consequences.
