Fired my first employee- it didn't go well

It's never easy. If you're relatively new to management, I highly recommend the Ask A Manager blog as a regular read. (Actually, it's good for anyone interested in management and HR best practices, but especially helpful for new managers.)

Spoilers Strange New Worlds Episode 7 - Those Old Scientists

Yup. In our time the term has already evolved from its original naval usage into a metaphor; presumably by Trek's time the metaphorical version has become so common that it's used in naval situations as well.

Spoilers Strange New Worlds Episode 7 - Those Old Scientists

I was more surprised that Number One knew the phrase in its 20th-century context. Even today, while pinup-type posters are certainly around, I would bet that the number of people who recognize the phrase is a lot lower than it was 50 years ago.

Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 2x06 - "Lost in Translation"

In a lot of ways, this episode was "Devil in the Dark," but it was well-done and not predictable. And really, I don't mind visiting some of the same concepts that TOS did -- part of the appeal of SNW is giving us the chance to see what the TOS premise and spirit would give us when moved from the...

Spoilers Strange New Worlds Episode 7 - Those Old Scientists

Well, that was fun. A lot of fun. Notes: First, they couldn't have pulled this off if the Lower Decks team hadn't made the choice to model the characters after their voice actors. So good job, Mike McMahan. (Jack Quaid is more buff than Boimler, though.) I'm glad they gave him purple hair...

    I loath Orteges!!

I enjoy the Ortegas character, but it's true that she's really more of an archetype than a character at this point. She's the "quippy hotshot ace pilot," à la Tom Paris, and it would be nice to see her get a few episodes in the limelight.

My gripes with Asian casting and character naming in Paramount+ Trek

A good point, and one that probably shows the way unconscious biases can persist, even when trying to be inclusive, simply because the nature of unconscious biases is that we're unaware of them. When people from a society dominated by the descendants of white Europeans try to come up with a name...

What If TNG Was Based During the Lost Era?

Re: the old designs in TNG, it seems like it's mostly the Excelsiors (and specifically, that one shot of the Enterprise next to an Excelsior-class that was used for the Cairo, the Hood, the Repulse, and however many other ships). TNG happens 80-85 years after TSFS, when the Excelsior class was...

Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 2x03 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"

Maybe they do, but it's always a Tellarite officer who gets roped into preventing it. "Well, looks the Romulans are at it again. This time they're going to send a hologram to 1973 to impersonate the leader of South Tellar and be nice to the leader of North Tellar, sparking 150 years of war."...

Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 2x03 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"

My first boss was the owner of a pizza place, and whenever he went out on a delivery, he'd say "I'm off like a prom dress." So there's an option.

Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 2x03 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"

Some babble about how intraship beaming is dangerous, I think. That gets fairly routinely ignored.

Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 2x03 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"

Though I generally don't mind that Trek was traditionally on the slower-paced side ... yeah, that was kind of riduculous. Along with the TNG bridge scenes that were like "Captain, they are firing on us." "Well, Mr. Worf, perhaps we should let this situation play out and see what happens. Earl...

Spoilers Star Trek: Strange New Worlds 2x03 - "Tomorrow and Tomorrow and Tomorrow"

Or maybe they followed a housekeeper around to figure out which rooms were likely to be vacant, and broke into one. Even without any advanced tech to override a keycard mechanism, surely either La'an or Kirk knows how to pick a lock.

What do you guys actually like about discovery?

I like the characters. Burnham is more flawed and damaged than most Trek captains, which makes her interesting; Saru and his backstory are fascinating; Culber is a humanitarian in the vein of McCoy and Crusher, and I always like those characters. (The only thing I wish, character-wise, is that...

How would you change or Re-Write TNG?

I'm going to ignore some of the dumb stuff from the first few seasons and file that under "the show had to find its footing." I'm also going to ignore specific episodes that were weak. So with that said, I'd do something about the wildly inconsistent characterization of Troi. The show started...

Spoilers Does it feel to anyone else that SNW is cynically mining Trek's past glories?

TOS copied itself more than SNW copies other series. An incomprehensibly powerful alien waylays the ship and starts fucking with the crew (a trope Roddenberry loved so much that he insisted on resurrecting it for the TNG pilot) ... a population is in thrall to a powerful computer ... the crew...

    Miles O'Brien?

Dang ... I never realized that. That's impressive ... not only is he approaching Ayala territory, I didn't even think there were enough episodes with Sickbay scenes for a medical staffer to rack up that many appearances. (And Ogawa is only in 16!)

    Miles O'Brien?

Interestingly, I'm pretty sure the recurring character with the second most episodes was the conn officer Ensign Gates, whose actress was never credited and whose one line, I'm pretty sure, was spoken off-screen.

What If TNG Was Based During the Lost Era?

In some ways it might have worked better. You could still have Worf -- after all, we went from the Ferengi being menacing villains who are strongly implied to eat their enemies to a Ferengi serving in Starfleet over the course of about 10 years. And it would lessen the weirdness of the way the...
