Yes, this. There's a temptation when one consumes science fiction to really rail hard against scientific and social improbabilities like 1000 years in the future being so recognizable to 23rd (and 21st!) century people. But it's not science, it's science fiction, which is written by people in a...
Reminds me of how ashamed I felt about processing my grandmother's death (we were pretty close) even though I knew for about a year before she passed that she didn't have much time left. Seven years later, I still feel this very empty hole that will never be filled, whenever I think about her...
Well if that's true, then I've really been misusing (and underutilizing!) them in all the other places I've lived...
Seriously though, I'm not sure if it is a New England thing? I heard mudroom growing up, it's what other people call a foyer (though not the French, you really don't want...
Both my parents loved TOS, and me and my brother would watch TNG with them when we were very little. It wasn't long before I became the biggest Trek fan in the house. I ended up watching DS9 and VOY alone in my room, on my tiny TV, using a rotor antenna to watch bad-reception UPN. I joined the...
Same. It was nice when she was bunking with Burnham, because we got to see more of her backstory. But since about mid-S2 her character has been generally frozen in place. I'm wondering how she'll cope in the future-now. It seems like she hasn't really started to process it. That might end up...
I finally put together a hall closet armoire thingy, as our front door just opens straight into a giant room, no hallway or mudroom or anything. It's weird to still be moving in 6 months after, well, moving in.
On a thing that frustrates me: Today was a big clean-up day and on multiple occasions when I threw something away with my hand directly over the trash, it somehow fluttered aside and fell on the ground. :brickwall: :censored:
As others have said in the thread, the story should be and I'm hoping will be the main concern of the show, and whether or not characters from other timelines play a part better dang well fit into the storyline. I'm hoping we've gotten all the nostalgia out of our systems with the first two...
You make great points, and I do hope that there's a good reason why it wasn't possible (either in a practical-exigent or technical sense) for the Federation to determine why the Burn happened. I totally get how some innovation is more about serendipity and bringing a different perspective to a...
I do hope that they have a better explanation for why the Federation they may not have spent much time thinking about the Burn, though even throwing a few semi-decent scientists on it for, oh, a hundred years or so would probably do quite a bit in terms of figuring it out. Or an AI or...
Yeah, the nuBSG musical plot device made my eyes roll. Wouldn't other people notice if a certain melody is popular? I hear Beethoven's 5th everywhere, in all sorts of music, and most people can identify these kinds of patterns.
I really liked Saru's approach to healing and growing the...
I've gotten to be more a popular professor with my students because I'm being very lenient regarding late assignments during the pandemic. Which makes me believe that some professors are still grading harshly, unfortunately. I've also been forced to make my classes online-friendly, not at all a...
This was a great episode, sans the melodic memory-program somehow embedded in everyone. That was a bit nuBSG for my taste. I'm still interested in where they take it and hopeful that it's not one of these oh-so-clever plot innovations but has a more down-to-earth (ha!) explanation.
Three...
Agreed. I think Discovery itself was supposed to be a sea change in moving on from the Enterprise in the franchise-sense, and there's no reason to continue to wallow in nostalgia as the Enterprise was featured last season. Season 1 got all the newbie Kelvin Trekverse fans on board with its...
Same! The first couple of episodes had some plot-device "clocks" but particularly in the latest episode, there was no formal clock, just a "we need this right now" kind of thing. The pacing of this season is much, better, overall.
