Trek lit and why it now disappoints me

As is probably not unexpected, this is a long one. I'm writing this in order to place in context my decision to put aside Trek lit as a personal interest, and also to do what I should have done some time ago and announce my withdrawal from the Trek lit community. I've mentioned in the past that...

Spoilers VOY: Atonement by Kirsten Beyer Review Thread

It is a very good book indeed. Voyager has never been better than it is with Beyer's relaunch. I'll try to get a full review up soon...

Spoilers DS9: The Missing by Una McCormack Review Thread

While it's long-established that this is a point I contest, I believe I should clarify some measure of my position. I won't post beyond this, because I've derailed quite enough, but I'll address this here in order that I may be understood. In particular because the Trek BBS lit forum and all the...

The Star Trek Encyclopedia getting first update since 1999!

That might also suggest that the Federation respects the intentions and conventions of those who do the discovering, and at least by the 2260s hasn't standardized such things. Perhaps it indicates that Alfa 117 was charted by a civilian organization, since Starfleet uses "Alpha"?

    The Great Chronological Run-Through

I'd forgotten that. :) Also, the incident is mentioned in A Time for War/A Time for Peace, I think, in which Scotty essentially says that it was the most difficult order he'd ever grasped with, that he "nearly fell out of his chair". I'll have to have a look later and confirm. In DS9, the...

    Please don't name him Owen

^ Xy and Burgoyne have a discussion about that in After the Fall. "You named me after someone who supposedly died heroically to save us but now it turns out he didn't, that he faked it and ran away instead? Also he's a kidnapper too, now?" That sort of thing. Of course, Xyon junior is...

A question, and my apologies if it's been asked before, but is General Mattings intended to suggest General Mattis?

My apologies for the presumption, then. Sometimes it's hard to read your intent, as I imagine is often the point. There was an issue I experienced with the edit function a short while ago, as it happens, in which attempting to edit would produce a blank box and I would need to paste in the...

You could just directly say "don't make multiple posts when you can edit the first one; I'm saying you should probably do that instead, and also expressing some form of annoyance at your habit of failing to do so". But thank you for your unique brand of subtly belligerent helpfulness.

There's also the fact that trust between Vulcans and Romulans is still somewhat fragile. it's sort of as though a natural disaster suddenly threatened to destroy Washington D.C. and (for some reason) Moscow had the apparent ability to save it, and the Russian ambassador, who Mr. Nero always...

There's a reference to the Bozeman having to alter its course to compensate for the shifted gravitational effects in the sector.

I suppose it makes sense that we'd want to jump forward to when the new DS9 is actually operational, and it wouldn't be logical to have it up and running in a couple of months. So I guess it was sort of unavoidable and inevitable that the DS9 story (and the beginning of The Fall) would jump forward.

I for one have the greatest admiration for all of you who read in languages other than your original tongue, Kilana. Being sadly monolingual as I am - and I personally relate to that as a failing - I respect all of you who make the effort. (My sister does better than me; she speaks French as...

    Please don't name him Owen

Perhaps a symbolic gesture like naming a child after a lost friend/colleague might even go some way toward resolving the issue of how much emphasis one places emotionally on the loss? Perhaps one feels guilty about forgetting the person, as might happen naturally as years go by and their...

Question for readers of Engines of Destiny [NO SPOILERS PLEASE]

I think the answer was B), that no-one remembered anything but that Scotty retained some vague sense of unease about what was now a momentary, quickly-discarded idea (not that his desire ever made much sense to begin with, which sadly is the major weakness of the novel). I can't recall for...

I suppose being only a year or so post-Destiny there's going to be a general solemnity and sobriety. A product of the times, perhaps?
