One of the very best; Trek at its finest (along with a handful of others). Fantastic girl for Kirk. Sulu under a very different, dark light, other Vulcans shown, great fight scene, ticking timeline, build of tension....fantastic closing speech by Kirk as he is about to leave the parallel...
I never understood or liked the whole "you're fired, Scotty" nonsense. The yeoman was hot enough I supose but for me few if any highlight in this one. I gave it a 5 simply out of respect for it being Star Trek. Maybe they should have just phoned it in. ;)
One interesting point - David Soul...
This episode for me is fun and charming. I have it somewhere in my top 30 and perhaps (if I were to really list them in order of favorites) it may reside somewhere in my top 40. Like almost all of TOS, its a gem. As gems go, there are 79 of varying luster (well...76 or so to be sure) ;)
A great episode with a terrific score. Although as mentioned previously a fan favorite, it doesn't quite make my top ten favorites. It is excellent and an important look at the background and culture of one of the big 3...but again as stated previously, something is missing (for me).
It would be interesting to know what a non-speaking part would garner an extra. There were several familiar faces show after show. If anybody would know it would be the all-purpose Eddie Paskey. The money had to be good, especially in his case.
Agreed. He was painfully aware of all of the Prime Directive rules of the Federation game, using them for his own evil purposes....and damned smug about it. In the end, he was just a plain, cold-blooded killer. Stand-out bad guy.
I gave it a 9 based on good production values, excellent concept and for taking a few risks using historical myth. It also had a marvelous, well administered score. Beyond that I have never liked how Scotty is portrayed when he has a crush, or how utterly out of character he seemed to be at...
Time for a nap? I believe Newmar is known for BOTH being a serviceable if not good character actress as well as her sex appeal. No sin in citing either quality.
Ho Ho Homeier suggested Ed Asner as a Klingon. Simply brilliant visionary casting right there! Absolutely brilliant, Ho Ho!!!
I submit the mostly forgotten but terrific Glenn Ford as a Starfleet senior, Admiral or authority figure. He had subtle presence.
How about Janet Leigh as a starship...
You nailed it on all fronts. I also didn't like this one when I was a kid, but as I've matured I appreciate far more, the beauty and romance of this episode.
While I'm maybe being generous in handing this one a 6, it is for me a fun 6. Favorite moment? When Sylvia realizes she is being used. Kirk's expression is priceless! Having D'Salle back was indeed a plus.
Absolutely spot-on! :techman:
I will go to my grave believing Campbell was brilliant as Trelane...and his delivery was absolutely perfect!
I will believe it until I am Dead! Dead! Dead!
I'm really not sure what was going on in S3. Shatner's hair looked mostly unkempt and in a few of them it almost appeared as if he was trying to grow a beard on his neck.
He looked FAR and AWAY better groomed in S1/2.....and about 15lbs trimmer in S1.
Terrific episode that also scared me as a child. I never understood why Kirk couldn't keep phaser #2 with the miners and they decided they'd use clubs if they had to, given that phaser #1 couldn't do the trick. 40 or so pistols wouldn't be too much to ask, for the interim investigation, me thinks.
