1 & 2. I think a lot of it is that I actually like their quasi-reimagined version of the mid-23rd century.

I'm kind of middle of the road. I appreciate it when there's efforts to respect canon. But it's not the be-all end-all for me. If the deviations enhance a character (i.e. Nurse Chapel) or upgraded esthetics (Enterprise, uniforms), I'm fine with it.

I would actually just prefer the Eugenics War as being vaguely referred to as something that happened in Earth's history, but never actually give a specific date to it. I would actually prefer if they did that with a lot of Star Trek's "future history", or whatever you want to call it.
