    The Maple Leaf Lounge

For me, it's mostly the coffee - I like my coffee strong. Don't get me wrong - if all that's around is a Tim Horton's and I need coffee, I won't turn my nose up at it. I just prefer Starbucks' coffee (I even buy it to make at home).

    The Maple Leaf Lounge

I'm a Starbucks drinker, so I think I'll pass. The tiramisu donut sounds amazing, though. I might get one of those and then pop into Starbucks to get my coffee.

    The American Accent

I don't know about that. When I met him a few months ago, I understood him perfectly. Mind you, it was at Dragoncon in Atlanta, so he may have been toning down his natural accent in order to be understood. I've never known anyone who actually talked like that. I think that was a Maritime...

Surely something good happened to you today

I bowled a 204 this afternoon (my second 200 game of the season - my average going into today was 162).

News The 25 most used passwords of 2018

That doesn't really make it more secure - it just makes it harder for you to remember. As a Web developer, I've had clients who insisted that passwords had to have upper and lower case letters, digits, and symbols. I always bring up the XKCD comic on the subject, explaining how it's length that...

    Omega molecules in DSC

Janeway specifically said that Omega particles were theorized as having been the cause of the Big Bang, so there's nothing saying that they can't have knowledge of them in the 23rd century. For anyone to complain based on the fact that they weren't mentioned until VOY would be akin to...

    Nicholas Meyer Discusses Discovery

Well, the mind meld scene wasn't meant to be enjoyable for anyone, I'm sure. But leaving that to one side, his opinion of TUC must be a recent development, because during the 50th anniversary year, the Toronto International Film Festival invited him to appear at a screening of TWOK. I was there...

    What are you reading?

After Accelerando, I decided to read another Charles Stross novel, Neptune's Brood. (I've noticed this year that I've tended to read a few books - not necessarily part of a series, either - by the same author in succession.) It's set in the same universe as Saturn's Children, but centuries...

    SPOILERS: Jason Isaacs out??

It wouldn't exactly shock me to see Lorca return in some fashion - not only from a story standpoint, because we don't know what the status of Prime Lorca is, but because Jason Isaacs likes working in Toronto. I met him at Dragoncon this year, and at his autograph table, I asked him specifically...

    PICTURE POST II!

In the "What Are You Reading?" thread, I mentioned that I was going to a Charles Stross book launch today... I thought it was for The Delirium Brief, but while there were copies available, the launch was actually for the next book in the series, The Labyrinth Index. I had only brought the...

Well, that's just to be expected. ;)

    What are you reading?

I'm currently reading Accelerando, by Charles Stross - it's about events following the Singularity. I'm actually nearly finished it, which is good, because I'm going to his book launch tomorrow for The Delirium Brief (which actually came out over a year ago, but I think this might be for the...

    The Maple Leaf Lounge

Exactly. I buy the Globe and Mail every weekday, and for the last month or so it's been nothing but pot this and weed that, and every other ad is for a cannabis company. Even the business section has been about 50% articles about cannabis legalization. I've taken to referring to the paper as...

    Klingon change for season 2?

At Dragoncon this year, I asked Mary Chieffo and Kenneth Mitchell for any stories they could recount about the acting challenges they faced. Mary's reply included the fact that they would often have to redo scenes because the Klingon actors would start drooling partway through a line of...

News CBS building their own studio for Star Trek

Huh. I could literally walk there on my lunch break. It's less than two kilometres from my office. I wonder what restaurants are up there... ;)

News CBS building their own studio for Star Trek

Cool. That's the sort of thing I was looking for last night, but I have poor Google-fu. The area I was thinking of, near Credit Valley Hospital, is sites 123/125/128. But I see there are a couple of much larger sites: 60/62/63, 234/236, and 284. Not to mention a glut of unused land around...

News CBS building their own studio for Star Trek

Good point. Or it might even still be a vacant area. Which would probably put it in the far west end of Mississauga - which makes sense, as that's the only part of the city where I've seen much in the way of vacant land. Mississauga is spread outwards - there aren't a lot of tall buildings...

News CBS building their own studio for Star Trek

I've been trying to find the specific location in Mississauga, but haven't been able to. Does anyone have anything a little more precise than just "Mississauga"?

    How is/isn't Discovery Star Trek?

Regarding Spock never having mentioned Michael: for all we know, S2 will end with Discovery finding Spock, and Spock being angry with Michael (or as angry as Spock can be) because they've prevented him from reaching the goal that led him to leave the Enterprise. If Spock's family dynamics run...

    How is/isn't Discovery Star Trek?

I think it's a little unfair to compare DSC to two series which were both based on books. The writers of OITNB and GOT had a leg up by already having material written by someone else that they were just adapting. (Not that adapting a work of literature for the screen isn't a challenge. It's just...
