Revisiting the DS9 Tech Manual: Internal Deck Structures

I've read a few tons of messages over the years about scales and sizes and such, and all I can really say about the DS9 station is that the 1451.82m (~4763') diameter was to me an acceptable compromise between the arbitrary 5280 feet used by the VFX folks and the original ~3600' that I started...

    Sternbach blueprints question

No full set has been published since the 1994 Pocket Books effort, sorry. - Rick

The Official Fan Art Lounge (Off-Topic Discussion Goes Here)

Wasn't my desk; I wasn't on the production. The way it went down was more like when there were no NX designs that jumped out as being perfect, VFX producer Peter Lauritson suggested the Akira as a design that "hadn't been seen much," and that became the stylistic basis for the NX. - Rick

Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

Heh. I created the diagram with stone knives and bear skins a zillion years ago, and don't have any hard copies or pics of it. What you've got there looks fine; most of what were were doing in the console type graphics were really more like generalized icons than super-precise images of things...

Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

No idea. The graphics I'm talking about were for the trapezoidal monitors attached to the TMP beds, just so we're on the same page. The vertical scales were a tip o' the hat to the TOS displays. :) I occasionally helped out with graphics on TNG, but those were mainly Mike Okuda's territory. :) -...

Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

In terms of the Ilia stuff, I did the static silkscreen art for the yellow-green bed she was on, and that was about it. I did do the ink art for the regular bed monitors, which actually lasted up through early TNG. :) - Rick

Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

Yeah, I got nuthin'. :) My actual published artwork didn't show up in Trek until TNG. - Rick

Spoilers Picard Prequel "Children of Mars"

The internal habitable volume of the Galaxy class is ginormous (tech term). While the standard crew compliment is a bit over 1,000, there are always visiting scientists and diplomats and other Starfleet personnel going here and there. The "comfortable" planet evac capacity is at least 15,000...

Things from other sci-fi you wished to see in TOS....

I got to know Bob Bussard around 1983 when I wrote and illustrated an article on interstellar flight for SCIENCE DIGEST magazine. I had attempted to get in touch with him back during COSMOS in 1979 but we didn't connect during that production. In 1987, when we went full steam ahead on TNG, I...

    3D interiors in Blender

Very cool poly model! And thanks for the nod. :D

Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

Well, probably more like fluffy spun glass to avoid melting and burning. Which are two things you definitely want to avoid at a major studio.

Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

The Voyager warp core was inspired by the one from TMP (I suspect our Production designer liked the look), and IIRC the lighting effect was achieved in a similar way - a slightly frosted tube, rotating lights, mirrors, and a ton of poly fluff to diffuse the light. - Rick

Elements of TOS which contradict later series

Some of the reasoning behind resetting the scale came from ideas about traveling at fractions of c, the speed of light. Some imagined propulsion systems, like a Bussard ramjet, might get to 0.9c, or 0.99c, or 0.999c, which is all lumped under "piling on the nines." Never getting to or passing...

Donny's Refit Enterprise Interiors (Version 2.0)

I have not a clue any more about the Phase II version of the bridge, sorry. So many years ago...so many years...where was I? Oh yes; things were being designed and rebuilt for the TMP version very quickly and it was really hard for one person to keep track of it all, especially when I personally...

The aesthetic of the post-Nemesis Trek Universe

Thanks for the thumbs up. It ain't my sandbox; "they" know where to find me and a few others, if they want to expand their legacy contacts beyond Eaves. - Rick

Does anyone know how fast Warp 13 is in "all good things"

That was pretty much a rationalization that was suggested internally by never officially established within STVoyager; funny how ever other Starfleet vessel ignored the whole pivoting pylon thing throughout the rest of DS9 and Voyager. Oh well. :D

    Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

The magazine for the Voyager prototype was still in work the last time I talked to Eaglemoss, which was just in the last week or so.

    Refit/1701-A - 3D Model, Full Interior

Heh. Technically, I was working alongside Lee Cole and Mike Minor and under the command of production designer Joe Jennings, and eventually P.D. Harold Michelson. As for the turbo diagram, the guts of the ship were astoundingly unknown with the exception of the sets being built, and there simply...

    Star Trek: Starships Model/Magazine Subscription

I *think* the forward window on the DF was supposed to be a nod to Borg-ish design bits added to make it not entirely Starfleet. There are some dark gray insets lit with green, and we can assume Seven contributed that stuff. The window design really came from the set designers, since we saw it...

"Enterprise" too advanced for 22nd Century

Mike Okuda and I actually had a pretty decent batting average (writer/producer approvals) when it came to fleshing out most all of the 24th century tech hardware and operations, and offering up some basic science pointers and astronomical data. TPTB could use it or not, sure, but pretty early on...
