    TNG Vignette: Pegasus Aftermath

So here's a little thing I wrote as one of the opening acts to a much bigger thing that I may get around to writing someday. This basic scene has been in my head for a while, but I was finally inspired to sit down and write it after a Twitter discussion of the messed-up Federation justice system...

Newtonian Physics and Artificial Gravity/Inertial Dampers

Imagine a two starships accelerate to a high sublight speed, say 0.8c, then cut their engines. Since Newtonian physics is a real thing (even if most Star Trek writers ignore it) they'll continue to travel at that same speed and appear motionless relative to each other. But what if a shuttlecraft...

TOS: A Tiny Post-Star Trek IV Vignette

After a recent rewatch of my favorite Trek movies--the "Spock trilogy" consisting of TWOK, TSFS, and TVH and a reread of Vonda McIntyre's excellent novelizations of TWOK and TSFS (the TVH novelization isn't in the iBooks store) I got to thinking about how Sulu, Uhura, and Chekov must have felt...

    Millenia-old technology

More than once on Star Trek we've seen the crew happen upon the home of a long-dead alien race whose technology somehow still operates after being left unattended for thousands of years. This strains credulity a little bit, if for no other reason that these planets always have oxygen...

    David Stern: NBA Contraction Possible

http://sports.espn.go.com/nba/news/story?id=5715816 What do you think about this? Honestly, I've thought for a while that there are too many teams in the NBA. I mean, would anybody really miss the Minnesota Timberwolves, Charlotte Bobcats, or Memphis Grizzlies? Statistically speaking, the...

Superman 2 Donner Cut: Something I Just Noticed

Okay, so the Donner Cut of Superman 2 uses the "flying around the Earth to reverse time" gag at the end to undo basically every event in the movie, and it's made clear that no one but Superman remembers what happens. (And we thought Star Trek invented the Reset Button!) And after he does this...

Explanation for the Borg's many changes

The real-world reasons behind the Borg's transition from invincible, coldly logical "ultimate users" interested only in consuming technology to more easily-beatable moustache-twirling bionic villains whose sole purpose is to assimilate living beings are well known (hint: bad writing, mostly) but...

    Thoughts on Aquiel

I caught the 6th-season episode "Aquiel" on SyFy last night, and I had a few thoughts: First of all, the Enterprise crew are pretty incompetent when it comes to investigating crimes. If this were NCIS, Gibbs would have spent the whole episode slapping them on the back of the head. Consider...

WHOSE RESPONSIBLE THIS: the next great meme

It started here., and it's sure to replace FAIL as the next great way to ridicule something on the Internet. Observe: Also, Let's see some of yours!

Transformers 3: Which characters should they ruin next?

Since Transformers 2 has earned more money than anything ever (except The Dark Knight) it's virtually certain that they'll make another one. Which characters do you think Michael Bay will ruin-um, I mean adapt, for the next one? Here are a few I thought of: Unicron: This is the one we really...

    Nova Olympic-TOS Season One

"I don't care if it is a classic, it was terrible!" Kevin Riley was saying as the turbolift doors opened onto the bridge. "And by the time the time-traveling alien Nazis showed up I just couldn't stand any more." "Kevin, you don't understand," Sulu laughed as they assumed their stations at Helm...

Something I noticed about Favor The Bold/Sacrifice of Angels

I re-watched most of the sixth-season-opening arc this past week (I skipped Sons and Daughters and Behind the Lines) and when I got to "Favor The Bold" and "Sacrifice of Angels" I noticed that the characters kept explaining the situation about the minefield and the Dominion reinforcements again...

    New Voyages name change

It looks like the folks behind New Voyages have renamed it Star Trek: Phase II (link). I think it's a cool idea. I like how they're trying to bridge the TOS/TMP gap in small ways by introducing some TMP (and never-before-seen Phase II) elements into the shows. What do y'all think?

Funny video: USS Make $%!@ Up

I found this video on JibJab that pokes fun at Star Trek's propensity to defecate a wad of technobabble to fix whatever problem the crew has gotten themselves into. It's pretty funny.

Star Trek IV Interviews at Trekmovie

Back on Monday, Trekmovie.com posted a link to some Entertainment Tonight interviews from just prior to TVH's release in 1986. The interviews were all filmed on the Enterprise bridge set. Up to now, I always thought that only the small slice of the set we saw in the film's last scene got the...
