    Starship Insignia

That would make sense. It's too bad "the memo" disallows these sorts of proposals, too.

    Starship Insignia

Interestingly enough, @Maurice, @Mark 2000 and I discussed this topic when we recently got together. As a Navy brat, I speculated that Theiss was going for something similar to the USN warfare badges, where the badges represent what part of the service you were in and/or your qualifications...

    Starship Insignia

Because Matt Decker's insignia in "The Doomsday Machine" isn't an error. It's something unique to Matt Decker, as he is something unique in TOS. Think it through. The answer is there. This is a puzzle (insignia use in TOS, and the memo provides he key). It's all there. I'll provide a clue...

    Starship Insignia

Sorry for the little confusion. Justman in my opinion didn't really write for amusement. Gentle reminder is a good term. But even when he was clearly being funny, it was always mordant, and almost always pretty clearly in the service of some goal; I can't recall too many memos that he sent...

    Starship Insignia

My memory is extremely fuzzy on that. I've read a number of books on th subject over the years, from Gene Coon's book, to all the Shatner and Nimoy memoir books, and I do recall situations when Roddenberry did seem to be fending off silliness from up on high. He, too, was also a source of some...

    Starship Insignia

His memo was about Starship personnel wearing the delta. Starbase personnel wear the flower. Decker should have worn the delta. Everyone or just the costuming department? The department Bill Theiss headed and why Justman directed the memo to him. Is that Roddenberry's spin or were there actual...

    Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Yeah, there was a lot of stuff between 1979 and 2005 that tried to align the perception that in TOS there were different insignias for different ships with the single insignia in TMP. Mostly to do with "Hey we just thought the Enterprise was awesome." When it turns out there was never an issue...

    Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

The sad thing is that most people ignore this. They try to argue that the Enterprise Delta was never the main insignia of the Federation when ship crews had different insignia (even though there have been episodes where non-Enterprise members had the insignia). Unfortunately, it also doesn't...

    Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

Thank you for solidifying my already pretty solid opinion.

    Donny's TOS Enterprise Interiors

To be extra clear, Justman said he consulted Roddenberry who verified that "starship crews" wear the "flying-A" delta. Here's the memo (again), emphasis mine:

Yes, this "boomerang" symbol appeared on the side of the ship hulls (both the Enterprise and the Galileo) and behind Starfleet admirals and the courtroom on "Court Martial". I've always loved the symbol and am interpreting it as an official symbol of Starfleet Command, before it adopted the...

    I like Captain Janeway

That was very well researched, I'm impressed :) I personally find it hard to fault Janeway so I'm sorry not to be able to offer much back but this made for interesting reading.

    This was great!!

    I like Captain Janeway

Nightdiamond, I’m new here on the Forum. I recently began re-watching Voyager (watched it first run, as I did Original Trek back in the day). I have been browsing here and saw your question “why people say she [Capt Janeway] was mentally unstable or inconsistent.” You sound genuinely curious...

    Discovery's uniform insignia...combadge?

I take Bob Justman's 1967 memo on the insignia to be the best indication of the intent for the delta insignia. Also of note, I was just rewatching The Animated Series, and the crew of the science ship in "The Eye of the Beholder" also wear the "Enterprise" delta.

    New Discovery logo

Whether or not it was intentional, it was fairly consistent on screen, and reinforced by ENT's design for the Defiant mission patch. When I saw Star Trek 2009, I guessed that the fleetwide adoption of the Kelvin delta may have been a result of that ship's destruction, just as the Prime...

Hey, I never noticed that before....

If you need an in-universe explanation, you could assume that up until a year or so before the Enterprise's five-year mission began, every starship did have its own emblem. Then Starfleet ordered that every ship use the delta. To make the transition easy, since they didn't have replicators...

Hey, I never noticed that before....

They'd also already deviated for the Antares in "Charlie X." It could be that it wasn't understood that the Antares wasn't supposed to be a part of Starfleet. I could be mistaken, but I don't believe that there's any dialog in the episode that actually says that. Also, the outpost uniform seen...

Hey, I never noticed that before....

There's at least one thread on this. GR wanted the delta shield universally worn IIRC, but Mr. Theiss deviated (which I like) in Doomsday and Omega Glory, then got a memo to un-deviate.

    The Truth about Jeffrey Hunter

That really is a shame he couldn't/wouldn't reprise the role for those few brief scenes.
