While I was not crazy about the OTT fight, I quite liked how it was set up. With a single line of dialogue, they explain why M'Benga has the Popeye juice and enrich his backstory with Chapel to establish they have been through some terrible things together. He's so scarred that he's always...
I’ve always been fond of the fx work on Balok’s ship, the Fesarius. Seems very alien and intimidating on screen, and the design works really well in the context of the story’s twist. One of the best alien ships in the whole franchise.
I was dismayed they didn't even make a pretense -- they could have announced earlier that this would be the final season and pretended like that was what the show runners wanted. Instead, they straight-up canned it. It's nice that they're letting them film a little more to add an ending, but...
That’s a positive way of looking at it. But if Pike can pull up all that info on rando kids, surely Starfleet gossips can find their way to Boimler’s basic personnel info.
I haven’t found the eps so far this season particularly funny, which has been fine, because the stories have worked pretty well as character-driven Star Trek. This one suffered, though, from a weak resolution. “They did it ‘cause handwavey handwavey can’t-be-bothered” might suffice for quick...
Henry Alonso Myers gets what I want out of Star Trek:
“I love genre storytelling, but when it skimps on character, it just never works, and when it delivers on character, it makes everything work,” Myers says. “We get to relish the downtime moments. It’s the comforting part of television that...
Henry Alonso Myers talks about how they’re handling Kirk in season 2 in this great interview with Variety:

I think I could have bought this version of Kirk more easily if they hadn’t had Sam underscore the pop-culture image of Kirk. The dialogue and portrayal just didn’t line up. If anything, they could have used Sam’s scene to set the stage for the alternate timeline Kirk we saw — driven...
Silly me — just realized they’ve placed her in the position occupied by Lt. Stiles in BoT, as that’s the role she’s fulfilling. I’m really wowed at the amount of thought and care they put into this stuff.
That’s how you do an opening cliffhanger for ST nerds. I don’t know that I gasped when I saw the maroon, but I might as well have.
I loved how talky and thoughtful this was. They really were tempting fate messing with a classic like BoT, but it worked for me because they continued and built on...
I've watched some of them twice already, but I'm thinking I'll do a straight-through rewatch once we run out of new episodes. That'll be a first for me with the streaming shows.
I was bummed to lose Hemmer, but his death gives the show an edge. When Disco started, I thought it might take a GoT approach to its characters — anyone could die at any time. Instead, Disco has gone more traditional Trek, and it no longer feels like the main cast is in any danger. So I was...
I agree with your assessment. TOS, TNG 3-6 and the TOS movies are my true Trek loves, so SNW is in great company.
I don’t think SNW has reached the heights of TOS, but it’s off to a really solid start.
When I was watching this last night, I wasn’t sure what to make of the ham and cheese sandwich I was being served. But I think I’ve come down on the side of “loved it.” It was almost a covert comedy episode, but it also delivered not one but two good twists. What fun.
I have to admit, my first...
Yeah, I can’t really vote because there’s no good option for me. I’m all in favor of serialized Trek but don’t think it has been done well so far.
Peak Trek to me is II, III and IV, a trilogy that is both episodic and serialized while leaning heavily into character drama. (And, notably, it’s...
The loons would have still complained — OMG, woman with short hair! — but I think the reception among more reasonable fans would have been much better.
Really, the goals of these shows are quite different — Discovery aimed to draw in new fans at the risk of alienating the old, while SNW...
