You are correct that all time references in the original series indicate the setting is either the late 22nd or the very early 23rd century. The timeline imposed later is pure retcon that will never quite square the circle with those episodes.
Kahless would at least have to be dead, though, to be known as "the Unforgettable." (Unless he was just so in-your-face all the time that nobody could forget him while he was alive.)

It is, but the quote Gerrold referred to ("I never was borned, I just grew") is not commonly heard anymore. For most people today it would require more explanation than he gives.
It's always been interesting to me that this shows how prominent "Uncle Tom's Cabin" still was in American cultural memory in the Sixties, and how apparently Gerrold thought it would remain prominent in the distant future.

Vance's films are sort of like an unassembled jigsaw puzzle, but from the poster image and some of the other films it becomes apparent that they are mourning their respective spouses.
I'm not so troubled by the idea of Kirk being credulous when he was dealing with someone who could affect people's minds. She could have made herself seem trustworthy.
