They were trying to go for suspense/horror, but I was literally laughing at the audacity of the Xenomorph/Predator hybrid, with a little Jurassic Park thrown in.
The TOS stuff I can excuse, they were feeling their way, building a universe that didn't exist, and certainly had no idea they were creating a multi-decade multi-media empire. The change in Klingons was made canon by both DS9 and ENT (for good or bad). That leaves the Trill stuff. OK. In...
That was kind of what I meant. As you go from one series to the next, there was good sense of continuity with what became before (or after), I would even include ENT in there as they made definite tie-ins to events in other series.
Certainly that wasn't the intent, but it became one...
Actually, I think this is a great comparison. A great novel series or a great TV series create a rich universe the the reader/viewer takes part in discovering and enjoying.
Now taker my favorite novel series, the Foundation series by Asimov. The first books were written in the 1940's. In...
His argument against the mismatch in technology, uniforms, Klingons, overall look, established facts, etc. are "it doesn't matter." That's hardly a compelling argument.
Two comments:
1. I found the ending of the Klingon War incredibly easy and lame. The Klingons are within minutes of attacking Earth, with their foot on the neck of the the Federation, and then "oh, never mind." That's about the most un-Klingon thing I've ever seen. And L'Rell threatening to...
Fact: the producers continue to urge fans to be patient, that 1) apparent canon contradictions will be explained; and 2) we will end up with the "optimistic Trek" of TOS.
For both of these to happen, it would have involve significant change over the remaining 9 episodes. In fact I don't see how...
I was dead set on NOT paying for CBS All-access just on principle - I did not think it was right to make us pay to watch Star Trek. But my daughter lives outside the US, and after watching three episodes, told me I need to watch, so I caved.
There, I feel better.
Similar to what others have said, this is taking place in an alternate universe (but not the mirror universe, it doesn't fit). The fungus drive eventually (and accidentally) takes them to the prime universe. That is the reason why 1) this show doesn't see to fit with the prime universe; and 2)...
I think, since they made a point to have the characters comment that they had never seen black badges before, that they were intentionally setting this up as a mystery.
Obviously the "alternate universe" idea pre-dates Dark Matter - that's not what I meant. But Discovery's fungus drive instantaneous transport IS a copy of the Blink Drive, and I guess I found their discussion as to how it could change the course of the war as an almost exact copy of the...
