Kudos to everyone involved for their hard work. I nearly went my entire life without seeing a guy in an unconvincing digital Kirk mask exchange emotional glances with a who's who of Memory Alpha entries.
It was a point in "Arena" that the Gorn are incredibly strong but slow moving reptiles. It's like fist fighting an alligator... you can outrun it, but don't let it catch you.
Both of those things are true.
The Eugenics Wars were originally described as the last of the World Wars and involved selective breeding. 20th/21st century Star Trek canon has been inconsistent and contradictory since TOS.
I dig that we now know why.
This episode was like eating a hotdog with nothing on it- it was fine.

How many people did the Horta kill? How about the Salt Vampire?
Star Trek can have monsters, and our heroes can kill those monsters if they need to... but IMO Star Trek is at its best when there is some measure of reflection or remorse or an attempt at understanding along the way...
Technically, Kirk did fight the Gorn on Cestus III.
The fight on Cestus III might've been of more interest to Sisko than the subsequent mano a mano fight because Kasidy's brother lived there.
This Spock is interesting to watch, but not because he kills without remorse.
The Horta was a mobile vat of acid that targeted humans, leaving only bits of bone and teeth remaining. It was not known to use language or operate space craft.
