Are you wilfully missing the point? It's not that it's one of many roles, it's that it's the single thing almost everyone knows Capaldi for. Look at what's trending on Twitter now. Peter Capaldi, Malcolm Tucker and The Thick of It. A lot of people probably just thought "Oh look, Malcolm Tucker's the Doctor". And the issue is whether it's wise to have the lead in a family show watched by many, many children played by someone known almost exclusively for saying fuck and cunt.
Sorry about that. Yea, I know what the WHO is, I was playing for it laughs, and also Eureka had a joke, where someone mentioned a WHO Doctor, and a character piped up that he loved Doctor Who
I know exactly what you mean. After he played my childhood hero Obi-Wan, I wanted to see what else Ewan McGregor had been in. The internets said he was most well known for Trainspotting at that time. I said, "Oh boy, a movie about train watching enthusiasts, that sounds like fun." But it wasn't fun. Obi-Wan cursed, took horrible drugs, shoved things up his butt, made poop, had sex relations, and showed his pee pee. The movie wasn't even about trains at all. I was traumatized for literally seconds, and then I realized I was a 24-year-old man who understood what actors were and snapped the fuck out of it.
More wilfull missing of the point. I'm on about the children. I wouldn't want 6 year olds hearing violent swearing when they try and find out more about the new Doctor Who, and that's undoubtedly what they'll come across. Why is this simple and reasonable point (unless people think it's fine for children to hear "fuck" and "cunt") so difficult for people to grasp?
I very much doubt many 6 year olds will have watched The Thick of It. Or be allowed to play on Youtube unsupervised to do their own research. Cos, y'know, they're six.
Oh I'm sorry, did they cast a male actor in a role that's been played by 11 other male actors since the characters inception. Fucking stroll on...
I do . I think we live in a pretty weird world where we're more comfortable showing children scenes of horrific violence and death, than having them hear sounds people can make with their mouth.
Why are 6 years olds searching the net by themselves. Do they even do that yet? I would hope most parents or I assume they watch their kids on the internet.
It's called be a fucking parent and explaining to the kid that the Doctor is played by an actor, and that said actor did roles that aren't appropriate for children. For that matter, any parent worried that much about swearing, probably has or need content filters on the computer used by their kid.
Peter Capaldi properly introduces himself: [yt]http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VDGzzGRKukE&feature=youtu.be[/yt]
On the one hand, I'm not terribly surprised BBC appointed another white male, on the other, I'm happy they went with a more mature actor to the role. After two young heartthrob types, it's time for a change of pace. I enjoyed the praises Capaldi gave some to the fans for keeping the show alive, and it's neat to see he has a lot of enthusiasm for the role. I've seen a couple Youtube clips of Capaldi's Malcolm character, but that's not really enough to give me a solid impression of him, so we'll see. As soon as I heard about the choice, I Googled his twitter feed to see what the man himself had to say and found a couple of different Capaldi Twtter pages in his name: One is a very nice, professional update for his acting stuff (and chock full of some rally cool nice praises for his casting, another is....a mite disturbing. The second Twitter page, also in Capaldi's name, is from 2011 with only two tweets-both antisemitic. What's the deal? Edit: It seems Twitter just took it down, as I was writing this reply, so I posted the link to the cached page. Better grab it, quick. So what's the deal? Anyway, I'll be very interested to learn more about the next Doctor as the details are finalized. My vpte would be for another plain clothes Doctor, letting his character take the center stage, but I'm pretty open about it.
We can but hope, but this choice of actor won't help. It's foreseeable that they'll want to see who this new man playing their hero is, and it follows that some will then be exposed to some foul language.
Actually, I'm also glad, but for a different reason. THAT's what I'd want to see as part of the bomb that gets them around the "12 regenerations" limit, not just for the final incarnation..
