STID "tracking" for $85-90 million opening [U.S. box office]

In live action, Trek has 5 television series and now 12 films. Wars has 6 films (plus some tv specials and movies most people never saw or remember). Its not surprising most people are excited for more Star Wars. For all the changes in style and casting nuTrek is still more Star Trek after decades of it, almost nonstop.

 

Fangirls? What the hell? This movie isn't Twilight!

 

But that's just why I like Trek more. More material to get into. 6 series, including TAS, and 12 films.

Star Wars just has the 6 films (and a few cartoons, and stuff). And if you go by most people's accounts online, four of them suck. There's a lot more meat on the bones in Trek's universe.

 

It isn't Twilight, no. But I've heard a lot of fangirling on the Net from people are not Trekkies in any, way, shape or form; who are just seeing this because of BC. Or Pine, or Quinto, or whoever.

 

For me, Cumberbatch is just yummy icing on an already delicious cake.

 

My point being if you had the old Trek still on I doubt they'd be making $80 million openings. I'm not talking about 2002.

$158 million up till Sunday worldwide is fantastic. Let's not forget also that Memorial Day weekend in the US is a long movie weekend and movies tend to go up or get higher grosses because of it.

I am a proud fangirl. Fangirls are everywhere.

The Cumberbitches, as the fandom is called, are HUGE. The tumblr drooling is insane.

 

They screwed up with the timing. You do not put Star Trek head to head with block busters. Despite what people who love Star Trek think, most people just don't give a damn. I have friends that love Star Wars and LOTR, but Star Trek, they're meh. I'm the same way with sports. I have coworkers go on and on about football and basketball and I don't care. Many saw ST09 cause it was new. Kirk, Spock and Bones were back played by new actors. A hot talent was creating it.

Then there has been the steady decline in movie sales.

 

Well I don't think I'm asking for much. All I want is one more movie, and then three more after that; and in between, a television series starring the movie cast, as well as a lunch box with the new crew on the front, and a thermos in that lunch box.

 

Every interview I saw with JJ while he was in Australia, and even several reviews of the film, mentioned his involvement in Star Wars. I suppose it's a double-edged sword; some people may take more notice because of the Star Wars link, but it also makes this film seem like a mere warm-up for something bigger.

 

Yes. Here in Australia, the press hype aggressively marketed it as 'from that guy who's doing the new Star Wars'. For whatever reason, SW is much more popular here. I guess I like supporting the underdog. I like both, but ST more.

I would have thought the SW hype would get people interested

 

SW is more popular because its marketed towards kids, while that sounds easy to say and do, it also has generations of people who saw the movies when they were growing up, it was probably their first great movie. It has a pretty solid base, Trek has never been marketed to kids and doesn't really have anything that you could market. It's always been seen as more cerebral than Wars.

It'll be interesting to see how the Disney movies perform, I think Trek could see benefits from them though like TOS did.

 

My dream is that on my death bed they will still be making Star Trek and I will die regretting that I will miss some of it. That is my gift to those that follow me.

I feel the same way. That would be my one regret, that they're making more Star Trek and I'll miss it, but I'll be happy to see it continue.

 

If this earns less or just about what STXI did, are we still likely to see a 3rd?

I really thought this was going to do $300M here, but it looks like $250 might be a struggle at this point, especially with the upcoming calendar.

 

That is a great thought..and me, too! My dream is that that I hope I can ask my great grandchildren to visit my grave and tell me what I missed so I could keep up with the adventure.

 

I want to be cremated and have my urn on a little table in front of the telly.

 

It will get a sequel assuming foreign takings double or more and the domestic gets 200m>

However 09 had far more legs and far less competition, I think Paramount have underestimated the effect TA had on IM3 and the upcoming F6.

 

Regardless of the movie's box office take, there will be a sequel, because the box office take will be more than enough to warrant one.
