Grade "Judgment"

B+. Hertzler pulls a rabbit out of his hat once again. Hell...Hertzler even made Voyager look good in "Tsunkatse" (with a little help from Jeff Combs).

 

B. A good episode.

 

I thought it was a really good ep, one of the best . . . until the last five minutes, when the "Just kidding, back to status quo ante" kicked in.

How utterly lame. This could have been a two-parter with some real tension. Instead, it's all made magically better by some credibility-stretching off-camera action.

I agree somewhat with this sentiment (though not with your final grade). It may have worked very well as a two parter... though perhaps it was the tight pace of the show that kept me engrossed. It may have been slowed down too much by stretching it out. We probably don't need to see how Archer manages to get himself captured yet again

 

I gave it a C+ (which is high for me).

Hertzler was great, as always. Seeing him as a Klingon again was a real treat... and he looked different enough that it wasn't a "Martok's ancestor" slap in the face. And I liked the dialogue about other Klingon beliefs and professions. Sometimes Trek needs a reality check (so to speak ) like that, much like Ezri's speech in "Tacking Into the Wind" about how corrupt and un-honorable the empire really is.

But the story sucked. It was all done so they could re-use parts of TUC... and it didn't make any sense. How did T'Pol arrange Archer's escape? What kind of repercussions is there going to be? How does any of this effect Earth/Klingon relations? Etc.

TPTB need to lay off the gimmicks and actually think their stories through.

All Judgement did was drop Archer into a recreation of Undiscovered Country and then magically drop him out. And while I enjoyed Nicholas Meyer's version of the Klingon Trial in Undiscovered Country... Judgement just seemed as a pale imitation. They had the chance to really do something exciting.... the confrontation of the klingon ship, the actual capture of Archer, the klingon trial, Rul Penthe and the mines, and then the Actual Escape of Archer!

Instead we get drop in and drop out in one episode - it would have been nice if they had extended the story to 2 parts.

And did anyone notice, that the Klingon walks out of the cel during Plox's visit and leaves the door wide open? Hello, run and escape please!!!! While I hide behind the wire fence and pretend I'm afraid of catching Archer's Cold! I'm Klingon... afraid of Archer's cold!

Loved that scene. Thought it was executed strongly. Very relevant too with what's going on in the news now. Timing is everything!

Again I give more credit here. I thought Hertzler gave a very strong performance and for these to reasons I give it an A-

And I can't forget the thrill of the mention and showing of the D5. I'm a sucker for very cool fan wank. It even looked like a primitive D7, Nicely done.

This viewer desperately needed an episode like Judgment.

 

Well crap, a relative who shall go nameless was messing around with the cable box and volume, so I didn't get to see it. But it sounds like it was a good one. I guess I'll catch it Sunday night.

 

This episode was mostly crap. A complete rehash of The Undiscovered Country. However, I like the ending so instead of an F I'll give this episode a D-.

 

Judgment is instantly one of my favorite episodes of Enterprise. There have been more than a few stinkers, so this one was refreshing.

Not learning how Archer was captured didn't bother me as much as plot issues usually do. Maybe because I just loved nearly every other aspect of the episode. I'm looking forward to the rammifications later this season. There are going to be some obvious diplomatic problems down the road.

 

C. If ST:VI hadn't done this story already, I would have rated this episode higher.

 

i gave it a B+... only so low because of the VERY short ending (even though it wasn't so bad).... and because it was a little on the boring side...

yes, i was well acted, written, and directed, but i am not a HUGE klingon fan, so in my opinion, it is not an A... but if i were to grade it not at ALL on opinion, i would give it an A-

Great performance (as usual) by J.G. Hertzler, but in general a rather pointless episode when taken on its own merits. If we knew that it wasn't part of an arc of Klingon stories, it would make no sense whatsoever, which is the big problem with the way Trek has done arcs for quite a while; they need to make individual stand-alone stories that have elements that carry over from one to another, in the same way every episode of the series should be standalone, yet integral. "Judgment" was a cliffhanger episode that somehow missed having a cliffhanger. The best thing this episode could have possibly had was a "to be continued" at the end, because without it, it's an unsatisfying and incomplete story.

Too much happened offscreen, and too many elements of the story were familiar, not just because the tribunal and the penal colony parroted The Undiscovered Country, but because we'd also seen the "predetermined outcome" sort of trial before, more than once. If we don't see Kolos again, the episode will have been pretty much a waste, because other than setting up an entirely different story for the future (a really bad thing to do in any story), it was really the story of Kolos' redemption, not Archer's adventure.

The entire Duras element was also pretty weak; it relied upon name-dropping (what else is new?) over character development, and Duras ended up a completely two-dimensional Klingon caricature.

All in all, nothing new, and worse, this entire episode was little more than a teaser for another episode. It had some good scenes in it (pretty much every scene Hertzler was in; the man simply commands attention), but when you put them all together, the story itself vanishes in a puff of smoke and a shattered mirror.

It wasn't boring, which is a big plus in an Enterprise episode. epecially considering the plot is a retread. so I give it a B-

I don't like TUC, so for me this was TUC done right. Yes, I'm a Trek heretic (Trekeretic?).

 

Even though it went against my better judgment (no pun intended) to watch an episode of Enterprise, I decided to give this one a shot. The show obviously hasn't improved much.

What really got under my skin was the massive and blatant amounts of recycling. Ship names, (Bortas, Enterprise) character names (Duras, Toral, I think I even heard a Koloth in there somewhere), and this time they even recycled entire lines of dialogue. The judges sentencing of Archer was lifted almost word for word from ST6. Archers "Our people used to have that problem too, but we overcame it. Your backwards culture should try to be more like ours." speach is a rehash of the same self righteous speach Picard and Janeway have given countless times. I can forgive their recycling of actors, since Hertzlers performance is one of the few redeeming qualities.

The episode, much like the rest of Enterprise that I've seen, displays very simple, childish perceptions of law and politics. Plus there's the obvious plothole of how Archer got himself captured in the first place.

As far as continuity goes, it's easy to see the deterioration of the Klingon honor system in this episode, and it's easy to imagine how it might lead to the Klingons being the ruthless bastards we see in the original series. This bit of continuity (real continuity, not just name dropping) is nice, even if it was probably unintended.

As far as the ending goes, I didn't mind it, since by that time I was looking at my watching thinking is it over yet? That it ended quickly without another lame action sequence was a relief for me.

I liked the metal claw-with-ball thing the Klingon Judge used as a gavel.
I liked the Klingon Tribunal room. Cool design, good lighting. I liked the bloodthirsty Klingons growling, kind of like those freaks who went to the OJ trials every day.
I liked the suspense. YES< suspense! Don't p-shaw! We all knew how unfair and violent Klingons can be and we all thought, " However will he get out of this one? "
Little did we know Reed would simply walk him out the front door.

I just love those TOS-style Klingons! Over the top, angry, dramatic...

I liked the ending. Okay, so the escape was easy, but the emotional moments between Archer and Advocate were terrific.
