David A. Goodman, I have a question about killing.

You know, real painful homicides and murders and such.

Do you and your bosses realize that in sci-fi/adventure, the possibility and consequence of death is pretty much required to create tension and drama?

That when situations have no real possibility of terminal consequence in adventure fiction, you end up with conflict and resolution that is bland? (Oh sure, you can have doomsday weapon X that may destroy all the universe, and that can be good sometimes, but since we all know it won't go off, it's pretty lame.)

Mentioning the Sopranos, as Braga did (*guffaw*) - aside from other things they have that ENT lacks like good dialogue, three-dimensional characters, and unique storylines, one thing that makes the Sopranos so compelling is that you really have no idea who might not survive the internal and external conflicts.

So, I guess what I am saying, and it has been said before, is that a few really gruesome and meaningful deaths may be the only thing that can reform ENT.

Here's my theory: No one cares for the characters on Enterprise, so no one will react to a death.

Sorry, but Enterprise is a failure, Mr. Goodman. Trek is dead.

 

Storm, you're asking the guy who got squeemish and ran away when you joked about disembowling B&B.

ENT is gonna suck as long as they make it about these bland characters, rather than about exciting guest characters whose lives aren't going to be the same next week.

Man, was I worried for a minute there!!

 

You know, I've always envisioned a Trek incarnation that was written along the lines that ER is written. Of course with the story arcs, but the introduction and bowing out of characters on a fluid basis... Yes, you'd have your core stars, but the cast around them should be dynamic.. just like in real life. People come and go over a course of years in the workplace. If nothing, ER is a very dynamic show. I mean how many times can they loose someone on an operating table and you feel it? ER manages to do that somehow. I won't lie to you.. I haven't consistantly watched the series' entire run, but in spurts here and there. You can almost always get up to speed in about the first 5 minutes of the show. And guess what.. people die all the time... and sometimes, even the main characters die. I don't think anyone's even been seriously wounded on ENT.. yeah, I know Reed was shot and had a bomb stuck through his leg, but I'm talking emotional wounding. This maybe morbid on my part, but I don't feel like I know a TV character until I've seen them be hurt... and how they deal with the pain.

Am I morbid?

 

Nah, you're just looking for a little thing called "drama."

Unfortunately, the way things have gone on Enterprise to date, it would appear you're looking in the wrong place.

Of course I was referring to characters.

Certainly no one should desire the gruesome killing of real people, talented people, or others like Berman and Braga.

 

You know, I hate to admit it - but you have a point. I honestly wouldn't care if any of them died. They may as well be carved out of wood.

I'm not surprised that an ENT writer would run far away from anything people consider amusing.

Amusement and entertainment seem mutually exclusive with the job.

 

I'm not sure... I thought that they were absent because of the holiday season.

No one of consequence here considered you amusing.

Anyhoo, Goodman didn't leave -- he just didn't post again in that topic. He hung around for a week or so; and one might expect him to return when he has something to promote.

You may or may not have noticed his later posts, since you were banned for a month for being so "amusing".

That's because no one of consequence takes ENT seriously.

Actually, I barely noticed I was banned as I timed it for when I would be on vacation for three and a half weeks.

Actually Mike Sussman posted after the purge and I'm pretty sure I saw David A Goodman's name while browsing the who's online feature the other day (he didn't seem to post anything though). So both are still around.

I doubt he'd read this thread though.

I guess I'm noone of consequence either.

 

And who would blame him?
