I suggested a similar sort of place a while back. Well, actually, I suggested it is Misc a so nobody probably took it seriously. But what I suggested was a forum just for the older members. I think this is pretty well the same thing. I like it. Another forum for me to post in.

Posting 'cause I forgot what the hell rank I am now (Captain? Commodore? Commander?) I know it begins with a "C"

No, not "A" for Altzheimers! [IMG]

And you don't think this is on the slightly discriminatory side? [IMG]

I've rarely before felt annoyed or disadvantaged because of my low post count before at this BBS. That is, until five minutes ago.

    Thanks.

    Hey Chris,

Wouldn't it be a better idea to squash the captains and fleet captains lounges together? All the various admirals (except admins) have just one lounge...

I've had problems with IE 5.5 in a couple of places. Anybody care to remind me why I bothered with the download again?

D'oh... it's funny how you never realise the simplest solution until you've slept over it for a while.

The reason the forums start with a Commander's Lounge is that I thought I'd otherwise have to create an Ensign's/Lieutenant's/etc. forum.... but of course I could also just create a forum for all of the Lower Decks together. Sigh.

Should be up in a few minutes.

Where does it suggest that people with a higher rank are more important? It's simply a place for people who have a certain of number posts to talk with each other - there's the Lower Decks forum, where newbies can help each other, there's the Admiral's Forum, where old-timers can remember the old BBS days, but they're not better or worse than anyone else.

In a way, this might actually discourage spamming. Going up in rank does mean that you will be able to access another Lounge, but it also means that you will no longer be able to access your old Lounge, so it's a very bittersweet advantage. If some of your friends or some interesting threads are in the old Lounge, you will no longer be able to read them. That's also something to consider.

I very much doubt that it will discourage spamming. The mentality around the BBS seems to me as the higher up you are the more important you become. Why else would there be so many lounges and "I'm now a ____" posts. It still shows that specific rank will garner you rights to thread and some people will try to get to the Admiral's thread as soon as they possibly can. I also very much doubt that people will slow down posting as they do not want to leave the forum. You can talk to many people from different ranks allthorough out the BBS and if there is a thread you liked in the forum there is always copy ans paste.

As for my stating that it would alienate the newer members, that was before you put in the lower ranks forum.

I have always been against the ranks and would have liked to see them removed. This for me is a larger extention of my annoyance.

Well, it's certainly too soon to make judgments about it. I see the fun value in it, and think it at least deserves some shake down time to see what happens. [IMG]

I really like this new feature. It sort of gives a purpose to the ranking system, and now that there's a Lower Decks lounge, it does that without excluding anybody.

As to the fear of spamming: As I see it, people who are gonna spam are gonna spam. People who aren't, won't. This isn't going to change anybody's attitude about posting.

The only thing I'm not clear on is exactly what subjects are fair game in the Lounges. Are they just another Misc. forum? Or is there something specific we should be discussing?

seven of eleven, the ranks are just a fun novelty, not anything around which a person's life revolves. I think it's a clever idea. I suspect the rank threads will turn into mini-Miscellaneous forums, they'll all be a good chunk of fun.

I'm sure that if spamming increases exponentially, either those spammers'll be booted or maybe the whole idea crunched -- but it does no good to thoroughly berate the idea (or, granted, espouse how incredibly wonderful it will be for one and all) before we give it a try.

    This is a terrible idea!

What's the point of this Ten Forward? We already have a Miscellaneous Forum, this will just encourage more people to post meaningless posts to gain in rank!

Not for everyone. We know of the people here who posted just to gain rank. And many of them admited it. The ranks are supposed to be fun, yes. However, some people see it as a contest or as a way to be more popular or as a way to whatever... But as I have a genocidal fury against spammers, trollers and flamers that can never be quenched and I find that this encourages those people and that it also indicates that rank does merit something, I am against it. Have a nice day.
