Using Pellet Guns to kill Rats. Good idea or awesome idea?

Alright. It looks like most people use the Daisy and Crosman brands.

 

I just went and bought this air rifle along with some pellet ammo. I'm as excited a little kid on Christmas Day!

I live in Northern Italy. I've only been in Rome for a few days for work or holidays, and I never noticed any rat. But maybe I was just lucky: to be honest, street cleaning is not top-notch, especially in the South, so I can't say I'm surprised. Beside, Rome is a really old city, things are not easy to maintain.

What an idiotic idea.

Use a better trap, not a mouse trap. The sticky paper will work if you use bigger ones. I caught a rat using that after chasing it around for a few days.

 

Quite possibly.

When I had a mouse problem a few years ago, I hid some sticky traps behind the furniture, where the dog couldn't get to them. But one little mouse was so determined to get away that he dragged the trap out from its hiding place. The next morning, I found it -- complete w/ dead mouse -- stuck to my German Shepherd's paw.

Seriously, a mouse sticky trap is much too small and lightweight to catch a rat. You need the kind that are made for rats.

 

My Walmart has nothing good. I'll try a hardware store and look for some more rat trap/sticky traps first before the pellet gun. I really don't want to put bullet holes in my house.

If I don't use my air rifle, it won't be a waste of money. It is still a cool toy.

I'll be setting it up later tonight. I fear breaking my fingers on these things! Hopefully I'll be able to start catching those little bastard rats.

I praticed shooting my air rifle in my yard today. I was expecting a huge bang like guns, but instead got a wimpy small cracking sound when the pellet was fired.

Also I suck as a shooter. I guess I'll have to pratice some more. I might have to change the settings on the iron sights on the barrel to be more accurate.

I just killed a rat with my pellet rifle! The little fucker was hiding behind the fridge and I shot it in the body with a pellet. It was pretty big too.

 

Heh, I was wondering how you were getting on. I was in the local airsoft supplier last week and noticed some 0.4g BB's, twice the weight of the standard rounds, thought maybe they'd work better on something larger like the rats.

Going to need to get a few myself for this damn squirrel anyway, it's taken to napping in the garden now.

 

I unfortunately know about mice problems, and my parents have had a whole family of rats infesting a small, old stable at their house in the country. The bastards are difficult to catch or kill, and they are smart. Like: scary level smart!

That said, I just killed a mouse on the stairs of our building two evenings ago. I stomped it with my slipper. Needless to say I threw the slippers away.

In the past I have tried traps, both the sticky ones and the more "humane", plastic ones that don't kill them. The sticky traps worked for the first two mice, then the others understood how it worked and avoided them, simple as that.

Then I decided that the only way to make sure you are rid of them is to actually block all possible access points to the flat. So I spent two days on my hands and knees, stuffing all holes and crevices along the walls with steel wool. They can't chew through it and they stay away because its small steel strands can potentially hurt their eyes.
It took some time and a lot of hard work but I can now say that I haven't had a mouse in the apartment for months (knock on wood, cross fingers, etc.).

I do have a lovely CO2 gun, It's a WinGun Sport 705, but I have to say I mostly use it to scare away (and hopefully hurt a bit...) the pigeons that like to poo all over my kitchen window sill. It works like a charm.

 

I've been shopping around for pellet rifles myself lately (No permit or range needed, so they'd be great for target shooting for a stress reliver, and waaaaaaaaay cheaper than a "real" rifle). Amazing how much has changed since I bought one last and how much more of a sport using air rifles has become. Hells, even Marlin (don't anyone say a word about Marlins, I love their lever-actions) has a licensed pellet version of their rifles and Winchester is in the game too.

 

Nice, I'm never sure about revolver GBB's, but that one looks pretty good.

That sounds awesome. I have a replica Winchester (non-functional) myself but it's an all wood/metal thing for decoration only.

My revolver feels quite good in the hands, it's heavy and sturdy and it looks like they really put some attention in the details and used high quality materials. I'm very happy with it. I also have a Beretta 92F semi automatic and my personal favourite pistol, the Colt M1911 A1.

I have a springer Colt 45 but I'm not a big fan, my favourite is always the M92F, I have a springer of it and the TM above, the shop in town has a shipment of 2012 full metal M9's coming in from China so I get first pick, woot.

 

I love them guns, but I honestly cannot justify to myself buying any new ones for the time being...
If I had the money, and the space to store them, I'd have a new one every week!

Anyway, congrats on the new M9.

 

I've been looking into PCP rifles. But I don't get where they're "Cheap" most of the ones I've seen are at least as costly as buying a black-powder gun. So I'm having a hard time selling myself on the ideal of the cost making it worth the jump from CO2 and pump.

Anyone got any experience with "Green Gas" pistols?

 

Both of mine are silicone-propane powered and they manage 295fps/1-1.2 Joule. That's with the 0.2g 6mm, I have 0.25g and might try the 0.4g "sniper" but they lower both the power, range and accuracy.
