There is no chance Scotland will vote for Independence in a referendum at the moment, we will be happy with fiscal autonomy.
Although if the SNP vote through their minimum alcohol pricing then they could go from their biggest victory at the last election to their biggest defeat at the next.

Those are some of the alternative designs from the time the Union Flag was created, well the first version, anyway, which didn't contain the Irish cross.

I wanted to write something like "Must not make gay joke." but quoting your post I saw it's apparently a sort of gay pride flag. I don't think red and pink go well together and I'm not a friend of furthering the assocsiation between the colour pink and being gay.

Not sure if you were talking about Cornwall, but if you were, it isn't a city it is a county, and is generally thought of as being one of the Celtic nations.

Yes, because the 37,000 people that consider themselves to be Cornish before English are a real threat to the integrity of the UK.

I'm just saying that in the event of Scotland leaving the UK, the next most likely candidate to leave would be Northern Ireland or Wales (once hell freezes over), it would not lead to a declaration of independence by Cornwall.

Well if Scotland were to leave, perhaps it would be time for Newcastle to leave as well, then we could finally install Wor Queen Cheryl Cole the First as our glorious leader, with Ant and Dec as some sort of court jesters.

Can't see Scotland leaving the union, although a world without Salmond would leave me slightly happier, as according to his cretinous view of geography there only is Scotland and London in the United Kingdom anyway, and the Sturgeon woman unnerves me somewhat.

Ant and Dec as Jesters, shouldn't they be funny.

I come from the same town as Salmond and Scotty, no it's not Aberdeen it's Linlithgow, and my auntie went through school with him,Salmond not Scotty although if you go to my parents house and pay them £10 they will give you a tour of the house Scotty will be born in 2222, I've not met anyone in the town that likes Salmond, perhaps it's envy.

I was thinking the same thing. That whole 'leaving the Union' thing didn't go so well for a few of those states back in the 1800's.

I guess we might have found the one person in the US who hasn't seen Gone With The Wind.

Also, it should be noted that Alaska has the Alaska Independence Party, which is a viable 3rd party in Alaska. But I promise...if Alaska tried to gain independence, with all of her oil reserves....Washington would not just shrug it's shoulders and say "Oh well...bummer it didn't work out, but we paid for Alaska out of pocket change anyway, so who cares?" ;)

Point is, there is alot more at stake with these issues than just whether a part of the nation wants to stay or go.

Any country that values natural resources over the democratic will of the people, that's an empire.

Being Irish I'm sure you're happy that sheep are a renewable resource?
But were sheep really the reason for what Britain did to Ireland in the past couple of hundred of years?

And most of all: Should I avoid posting at 6am and go to sleep?

This is the sort of statement, like "whatever you do, don't mention the war" which is essentially a red herring. Some things in history impact on what happens right now. The English and the Irish have made their peace. They have gone their own way for coming up for 90 years now. Despite what activists in NI would have the world believe, my feeling is that Ireland doesn't want that province any more than the UK does - it's a real poisoned chalice.

Well if memory serves (and let's be honest, usually doesn't) Northern Ireland is something that's been running at a financial loss for a long time - that is, basically costly to own.

I think by and large only the Northern Irish (be they DUP, SDLP or whatever) really give a damn about what's going on in Northern Ireland. I really could not be less plussed as to its future.

Also: Pft, Ireland used for sheep? Don't you know we also have potatoes? And cattle?
