Oregon Teen Arrested in Plot to Bomb Holiday Event

Some people are just psychopaths.

A Somali-born teenager attempting to detonate what he believed was a car bomb at a packed Christmas tree-lighting ceremony in downtown Portland, Ore., was arrested by the authorities on Friday night. They had spent nearly six months tracking him and setting up a sting operation, officials in Oregon said.

The bomb, which was in a van parked off Pioneer Courthouse Square, was a fake — planted by F.B.I. agents as part of the elaborate sting — but “the threat was very real,” said Arthur Balizan, the F.B.I.’s special agent in charge in Oregon. An estimated 10,000 people were at the ceremony on Friday night, the Portland police said.

Mr. Balizan identified the suspect as Mohamed Osman Mohamud, 19, a naturalized United States citizen. He graduated from Westview High School in Beaverton, Ore., a Portland suburb, and was a sophomore engineering student at Oregon State University in Corvallis, authorities said.

Yikes, that's pretty crazy. I live in Oregon' it's hard to imagine this happening here, even in Portland. Closest thing I can recall is when a guy made about 5 pipe bombs and planted them around Salem in an attempt to kill his ex-wife, but throw the cops of him as a suspect by making it seem random.

Glad this kid was caught before he hurt anyone.
 
It was a Somalian. They are a Muslim country. Its time the cops start focusing on the bad guys instead of everyone. At some point we have to say enough is enough. It is not a religion of peace in any way shape or form.

The bad guys do include people like the Unabomber and the Olympic Park Bomber neither of whom was a Muslim.

Perhaps in the midst of your bigoted commentary you missed the fact that the guy was under surveillance, had his bomb replaced with a fake one, and was then arrested? They seem to be handling things pretty well with conventional law enforcement techniques and intelligence gathering, without resorting to rounding Muslims up and throwing them in camps or whatever extra draconian measures you're suggesting. Our freedoms have been eroded enough as it is.
