I think enlisted person was trying to suggest that the transistor was reverse-engineered from “alien technology” supposedly derived from studying the Roswell UFO.

Uh, have you seen what the first transistor looked like? Doesn't exactly look like advanced alien technology, does it?

Prior to the first manned landing, there were several unmanned Ranger probes that took photos and crashed into the moon (intentionally). Then there was a series of Surveyor robot probes that soft-landed on the moon. Apollo 8 orbited the moon, then Apollo 10’s lunar lander descended to within 14 kilometers of the lunar surface. (Apollo 9 didn't go to the moon; its purpose was to test rendezvous and docking with the LM in Earth orbit.)

Then there were the six successful landings: Apollo 11, 12, 14, 15, 16 and 17. If you count lunar orbital missions, human beings have been to the moon 8 times. Was ALL of that faked? Sheesh.

But nothing that has affected us at a nation, heck as a world so profoundly as the transistor.

Everyone on this thread has given you facts. You just seem to be missing them.

The whole Roswell thing is also a bit overhyped. If you want to make the whole aliens and the government thing an issue I'm sure there are a lot of more important things to focus on.

1934, radar. It was a technology flying under the radar (heh heh) during development. So it looked like something brand new, even though the concept was much older. Yet no aliens were involved. Heck, the Brits were convinced Hitler was developing Death Rays during the war, and even that didn't have any alien connection.

One question the doubters never seem to answer is just why NASA faked a Moon landing not once, not twice, but SIX times!

Why did they fake it six times?

How about powered flight, computers, TV, atomic weapons, jet engines, rockets, etc? These greatest inventions were ALL pre-transistor and more 'profound' than the transistor on its own.

OH, and let's not forget the car!

The concept of radar might have been older but I am quite familiar with tube theory and it all makes sense and can be shown step by step of its Ideas and creation. Some very great minds went into the development of radar. Radar theory is mind blowing when you go through it the first time but it is understandable, it evolved. Transistor was more like Bam! here it is.

I am not going to ague that. I was just trying to relate that it was a complete and total game changer for the field of electronics, yes all the prior stuff was possible with tubes and tubes still have their place in electronics that the transistor has yet to get close to, like the magnetron, but ....My god, the transistor. How many are we using at this very moment? Jeez, the younger generation takes so much for granted. Where would we be right now without the transistor that we adapted from alien technology? No laptop, cell phone, we would be in the dark ages. One EMP blast and the world would earn a new respect for the transistor.

“Adapted from alien technology”? You really think the top engineers of the day couldn't have come up with that first crude transistor -- basically a chip of rock and a few wires -- without the help of little green men?

I suppose the pyramids at Giza were built by aliens too.

Our scientists (Race A) probably copied the transistor from the the aliens (Race B) from the spaceship that crashed at Roswell. Race B copied it when a spaceship containing Race C crashed on their planet, likewise Race C got it of Race D in the same manner and back to infinity because we all know that only aliens are capable of inventing such things and no-one is an alien when they are on their own planet.

I want to hear his theory on this too. I'll buy you a Coke if it's not aliens.

Everything seems so simple after the fact. The fact is that rocks and wires had existed a long time before 1947 and they "invented" it just a short time after absolutely nothing landed in Roswell, New Mexico. Its one of those things we will probably never know the truth of. For those of you who believe there was no Roswell cover up, I cannot relate to the Disney World faith you have in our government. I don't share that. I question the governments motives and wish more people did the same. For those who defend the government without question, it scares me.

That may not be true. There's been some debate over whether or not the workers who built the pyramids were in fact slaves. For instance, there were tombs built for the pyramid workers that were discovered alongside the pyramids; the workers were buried with food and drink to support them in the afterlife, which would not have been done if they had been slaves. This suggests that the pyramid workers were paid, and took great pride in their work.

^^ I believe the consensus among modern historians is that the great monuments of Egypt were built not by slaves, but by conscripted freemen. It was like doing your national service.

This isn't about the government. The space program was coordinated by NASA, but the Mercury, Gemini and Apollo spacecraft and all their components and support systems were manufactured by private aerospace and industrial companies involving thousands of people. The transistor was developed by private industry and it didn't just suddenly appear out of nowhere. Scientists and engineers already knew that elements like germanium and silicon could become electrical semiconductors when certain impurities were introduced in controlled amounts. It was just a matter of applying that principle to practical electronics.

Nobody had made a powered flight before the Wright Brothers accomplished it in 1903. Did space aliens teach them how to build an airplane?

Well I'm not American and don't fall for the Roswell story. I'm not defending the US government at all.

The principles of the transistor were first patented in 1925. A primitive version was first built in 1942. It's a key component in signal amplification. To claim that human beings aren't smart enough to figure it out on their own (especially after decades of electronics research) is frankly insulting.

What does this have to do with "The Government" supposedly faking the moon landings? Is your faith in your position so weak that you have to change the subject and insult the people who understand the facts of science & history? I for one would still love to hear about how "The Government" found it to be better / easier / cheaper to do so.

Oh, and "The Government's" motives for the Space Race are well known and thoroughly documented in multiple media.

If a confirmed landing of an alien spacecraft had happened in 1902 and then cam government denial, then some new invention happened, it would make me think the two were related.

Signal amplification was going on way before transistors with vacuum tubes which also give a 180 degree phase shift. I think something happened in the desert of NM and the government won't tell us what it was and we got the benefit of it.
