Re: Should novels set in the JJVerse rectify the film's plot holes?

Admittidly, that was done to show that Star Trek 2009 was a Trek where the unexpected could happen, that said, I seriously doubt they would ever allow earth to be destroyed. As far as TV is concerned, come on - you KNOW (be it in a multi-part episode or sngle episode) the 'heroes' will always eventually prevail. What keeps you watching are the character interactions an the story and plot elements of how they prevail - but you know they'll come out on top at the end (modern series finales not withstanding of course). ;)

The only way ENTERPRISE could ever be my favorite Star Trek show is if it were the only Star Trek show. It's the worst of the five series, but it IS better than any other show that ever existed.

With the possible exception of Babylon 5, the second greatest sci-fi franchise there is.

I'm still working my way through all the ENT series and I'm really enjoying it. Unlike a lot of geeks on this board I'm a social sciences geek (majored in sociology and cultural anthropology) so for me character development is very important, and I think ENT does this very well. In this regard the more I watch TNG the more it disappoints me.

For me it is. It brought Star Trek back to my life after many years.

I guess you've never actually watched Star Trek: Voyager then.;)

From start to finish. That was one of ENTERPRISE's early problems. It started out as a VOYAGER rip-off.

It is my favorite, barely edging out DS9. For me, Enterprise was the most consistent with very few bad episodes. I'll always wonder if they could have kept up the consistency over three more seasons.

Would you please elaborate? I watched both series start to finish and I don't see a connection.

Well, early on, Enterprise was the only ship out there, they had no support from starbases that they could easily visit to refuel, resupply, etc. Same as Voyager. T'Pol seemed to be nothing more than a cross between Seven of Nine and Tuvok. At times the writing seemed similar. And there were Harry on VOYAGER and Travis on ENTERPRISE, they seemed like the same character to me.

At first, I also saw Trip as a knock-off of Tom Paris and Phlox as a knock-oof of Neelix, but a recent re-watch has made me rethink that.

I too believe the Plan A for Enterprise was "more Voyager" (itself "TNG-lite"). Not so much in the characters, but in the storytelling style and formulaic plots.

Enterprise is a "rip-off" of TOS. Its characters and setting have more in common with that than with Voyager.

And that's why I enjoyed it more than any other 'modern' (ie post 1987) Star Trek series.

I certainly found it the most interesting and exciting series, but it certainly helped that I read no spoilers - unlike every other series.

I wouldn't rate it as my favourite - DS9 is ahead, and Voyager probably equal, but I certainly enjoyed many episodes.

I love ENT and VOY, but I'll have to agree that the first two seasons where just essentially VOY seasons 8 and 9. Granted, those two seasons were much better than VOY, but the style, storytelling, and overall tone of the seasons was remarkably similiar to VOY.

The only differences I noticed was that ENT used FAR less technobabble (virtually none) and had better internal continuity. Both are reasons I think the first two seasons of ENT are better than most of VOY.

Now, don't get me wrong, I love VOY and early ENT for what they are - mostly stand-alone, light-hearted, status-quo maintaining episodes. However, ENT didn't get out from VOY's shadow until the show finally went in a new direction in season three.

OK, I'll buy some of that.

At the same time, I don't see how either of the shows could have been constructed any other way, in light of their respective premises.

Yes--this. Although, in the end DS9 usually wins out. I just have so much love for it :)

To be honest I am the opposite of most ENT fans though; I preferred the first 2 seasons, felt the show dropped of sharply in the 3rd, and felt the 4th made a good effort to rebound but was ultimately unable to rekindle the feel I loved from the first 2 seasons.

I also like the nod -- not ripoff  -- to TOS.

You're not completely alone (and welcome to the ENT forum :) ). I too preferred the first 2 seasons - although I disagree about the sharp dropoff in season 3.
