Should they bring back Janeway?

Oh I'm still here too. Just not active currently. The online novel is good, but a book would be better.

 

It IS a book. It's on the shelves now.

 

It's not an online novel. It's a paperback novel based on Star Trek Online the new computer game. BTW I'm not too far into the game but it also features adult versions of Miral Paris and Naomi Wildman. Miral has what appears to be an important role. So any of you Voyager fans might want to check Star Trek Online out.

It's not just a game. It's an experience.

 

Does it? It's more his choice of subjects, and the fact that people want to read something that an authority group figure (say the Catholic Church) tells them they shouldn't - before that happened, he wasn't a big deal, so I doubt his style has anything to do with it. Marketing chimps just love free publicity.

I've read most of them - Angels & Demons is his best, followed by Deception Point, then Da Vinci Code (which I picked up the brand new hardcover in a charity shop about two weeks after release, and before the publicity). Haven't read Digital Fortress or Lost Symbol yet, though I do have the former.

 

Isn't that sort of the point? Not every published writer has to be Shakespeare or James Joyce, but there's certainly something to be said for the ability to find a niche where people want to give you their money. An interesting, or controversial topic, characters, mystery, just good timing, any of those things are perfectly valid. But usually gotta have at least one of them to make it. Brown probably won't win many literary awards, but he's certainly found something that works for him...

No, probably not. Eventually, his 15 minutes will be up, and people will move to some new fad. He'll probably still enjoy decent sales, but not the astronomical numbers he has had recently.

Imagine that's true of basically ANYONE in any sort of entertainment-related profession, though. Never know how long your time is going to last, so gotta make hay while the sun shines, etc. If you can bankroll your whole life off of one quick score, it might hurt your ego later on, but still set for life, so tough to complain. People are fickle, and quick to move on to the next big thing, so long-term success is fairly rare.

 

I don't know if I agree with this... the part about her inconsistancy. I feel that the amount of responsibility and stress, the different situations would warrent differences in her attitude and moods. I feel Janeway was/is a well balance person strong minded, stubborn, sweet and passionate, and you don't want to upset her because she can be not so nice. In one episode you can see all of those things in her character. However I feel the writers haven't done here justice either.
Everyone is of course allowed their own opinion I see what Janeway1212 was saying, because I really admire the Captain of Voyager and I don't personally think there is any good reason not to like her EXCEPT that is just the way it is and most people wont be persuaded or bent in a direction they don't want to follow or think.

That's always how I've seen it. Janeway carries a great deal of responsibility and indeed guilt, and for good or ill she eventually chooses to bear that burden alone as captain. As the years pass, those levels of stress take their toll. Though, mind you, I've never found the character (onscreen) to bit as inconsistent as others have accused her of being. It's certainly, to me, a more humane and rational explanation than String Theory's "Ding--you've got brain damage!"

There's an unfortunate tendency to write Janeway at extremes, whether it's the embittered husk of a human being portrayed by Peter David, or the gag-worthy, sickly-sweet Janeway of the Golden books. For someone who was supposedly 'all over the place', it's a really narrow conception of the character; not to mention rather unfair. Writing Janeway as though constantly in "Equinox"-mode is like writing Sisko in constant "For the Uniform"-mode, or Picard First Contact.

What a ride it's been. Accusations of corruption, accusations of sexism, attacks on professional writing by Janeway-loving fanficers, pro writing vs. fanfic, people deciding books they haven't read are terrible, people saying that books the have read are terrible, the merits of Before Dishonor, the merits of Full Circle/Unworthy, people sharing what Janeway means to them...

 

damn, and heree i was hoping the bloody thread could fall off the front page and we could move on...

 

^^^ Well, if the moderators are consistent, they'll close the thread soon, since with this post we're only 5 posts away from the 1000 post threshold, which they have imposed on other threads even after there was no software reason for it anymore.

 

Then go read Needs of the Many and do a Janeway isn't dead in at least the STO universe dance.

Not to mention this is a pretty damn moot point as SHE ISN'T DEAD IN NEEDS OF THE MANY OR THE STOverse AND ACTUALLY APPEARS IN THE BOOK, WHY WON'T THE JANEWAY FAN MAD ABOUT HER DEATH GET THIS!

 

I kinda liked Janeway, and was saddened by both her death and the way she was portrayed.

 

....Why Voyager isn't Voyager without Janeway, did Han Solo shoot first or did Greedo, why did the final Starfleet vs. Dominion battle have to use stock footage, did Kes look good in a red or blue duty skirt...
