Star Trek passes 8 Million DVDs Sold

I don't go to TrekLit since I haven't read a Trek novel in a long time, but let me guess... someone who has a rank in his screen name?

His posts are hilarious, especially considering the responses of people who actually know what they are talking about.

 

Yeah, I was just thinking it was sweet so many people loved it enough to want a good copy.

 

How do they figure out how many illegal downloads have occurred?

 

The WAG method (Wild Ass Guess).

 

- Establish download location servers.
- Count unique IP addresses that accessed those files on said server logs.

I have a friend who made two or three different burned copies of TREK months before it hit DVD and BluRay by accessing foreign websites where he could download the entire movie, albeit with some shoddy picture quality. He also knows someone who got access to a pre-release, not-for-sale copy of the film and saw that version too.

 

The are all kinds of pirated versions out.
From crappy cam in theater quality to full 80GB blu-ray rip.
And that happens with almost all movies these days.

 

I agree with the WAG.

But you have to think about how most people pirate - click one of the top links on a google search. Combine that with bit torrent is based on a inherently insecure protocol its not that hard to track the pirates.

On an earlier poll I reckoned over 10m copies would be sold - we are nearly there .

 

I watched it at the Cinema (IMAX), downloaded the pirate and tonight I am watching the bluray of it...

 

Best Buy is featuring Star Trek in an commercial for TVs. How's that for popularity?

 

THAT one caught me by surprise. I could hear the music from the living room and I was wondering why I could hear the main theme to Trek XI months after the Blu-ray release, walk into the living room and it's a Best Buy commercial for televisions! I was excited.

Anyhoo, I've done my part! One blu-ray for me on release night, one DVD for the winner of a contest, and one DVD for a friend.

 

Although a friend sent me an advance copy of the film, my brother bought me the 2-disc DVD with special features for Christmas and a Blu-Ray for himself... so that is 2 more for the tally.

 

I think a lot of us buy multiple formats or copies; we got the bluray for the big screen and the DVD for the computer.

Before the bluray came out, we were visiting a wonderful site that had already cut bluray screen caps of the movie; my computer won't play bluray.

 

Star Trek moved UPWARDS again to #3 on the chart of Top Blu-Ray sales for last week, jumping up three spots from #6.
