Why is ABC sacrificing V putting it up against NCIS?

I know they are exicted by the buzz but I think it would be better off following LOST in the spring/winter season.

NCIS is a tough competitior...and what if the show is still airing when IDOL comes back?

The current plan seems a recipe for failure....

I like your idea of moving it behind Lost. ABC might actually have me watching one of their shows that comes on after Lost if they were to do that.

Putting it up against NCIS might be a vote of confidence. After all, ABC has to put something up against that show. Why not use a show that appeals to non-NCIS watchers? How much overlap is there between sci fi fans (and, crucially, the sci fi-liking general public - a much bigger audience of the sort that made Trek XI a big mainstream hit) anyway? All that NCIS/CSI/blah blah stuff has no appeal for me. NCIS got 15M-18M viewers over the past season. Out of a population of 300M, there are still a whole lot of people not watching that show.

That might be good for V, but ABC might think V is strong enough not to need the lead-in timeslot, which they would prefer to use for a less-buzzed-about show that needs the boost. ABC has to think about its whole schedule, not just one show.

I think they're pairing LOST up with FLASH-FORWARD instead, which seems a better fit.

Well if it is on against NCIS, guess I won't be watching it then. I have really gotten into NCIS over the last year.

I'm in the crossover audience, though to be fair NCIS is the only cop show I watch.
I figure I'll just watch NCIS and then watch V on Hulu.

I'm crossover audience, too. But that is what multiple multi-tuner TiVos are for.

The time slot after LOST has gotten EVERY show cancaled!

They have to put something up against NCIS, maybe they can just have a black screen?

I don't know if a lot of NCIS viewers would be interested in V, though.

No, FF is slotted for Thursdays at 8pmEST, opposite Survivor on CBS, Bones on Fox, Vampire Dairies on CW and whatever NBC runs Thursdays.

I'll definitely be tivoing one or both shows. I like NCIS. I really enjoy the characters interaction, and it thankfully lacks the heaviness present on the CSI shows.

Yep. NCIS has a nerd character and a nerd-bait goth science chick. If anything, it's the Big Bang Theory of procedurals.

That does make sense. Movie studios often do that when a huge summer film is coming out. They''ll release something that they hope will appeal to people who don't want to go see the big summer movie.

This seems to be sort of the same thing.

Personally, I don't give a damn about NCIS, so I'll still be watching V.

Well ABC has to use the slot that airs versus NCIS, so typically networks aim shows that would not have the same target demographic breakdown.

While NCIS does do very well in total viewers it's audience is typically older the audience that ABC is aiming for.

As for IDOL, well networks know this as well so they do understand that shows can take a hit against IDOL, but thanks to Idol only airing for 4 months out of a season it gives the network a chance to build an audience.

Frankly there are worse time periods. FOr at least the last three years the Thursday at 9pm timeslot has been consistently the most brutal. Though with both CSI and Grey's taking large hits last year, this season could be the exception.

It seems to me like they're planning ahead. This way they can claim stiff competition as opposed to just plain sucking as the reason why it bombed.

Of course this is just my humble opinion, I do not actually own a time machine.
