Pretty much. Emphasis on the very little. I'm sure she'll like it. My sister (a total hater) went to watch it with me, and she loved it!

Nothing. The less traditional Trek knowledge the better, it's all changed anyway. That's kinda the point. You don't have to know a thing to enjoy the movie.

In the beginning my friends were confused about why Spock was acting like an "aloof asshole" the entire time. Just explain how Vulcans view emotions and why. Everything else is pretty clear from the get-go.

    Will do! :bolian:

This makes sense to me. This thread has me appreciating the movie even more. I never would have thought it possible for a movie to appeal to both trek novices and experts alike. That's quite an achievement.

I'm not expecting my daughter to like the movie, but at age 20 she's finally beginning to think I'm cool again, so who knows? :)

I agree with this. you might also explain that Vulcans live very long and Spock was engaged in reunification. Perhaps show her those episodes? Perhaps not. That should be good enough.

You may be right. Although the less said the better, just a little background about Vulcans might be useful. I'm really hoping she has lots of questions after the movie and gets more interested in trek.

    Not much just this:

    1. Read alll DS9 novelizations
    2. Watch the first season of Voyager in Swedish
    3. Purchase three of the classic starfleet manuals published in the 1970s from Ebay.
    4. Attend two of three upcoming Trek conventions.
    5. With notepad, and a film student in attendance, view TMP, TWOK, TVH, TOS (remastered) and FC.
    6. Purchase The Official Guide To Star Trek Acronyms. (TOGTSTA)
    7. Stay one night at Schrute Farms Agro-Tourism weekend retreat in Scranton PA.

That's it! Just complete this short list of assignments and your friend is good to go! Well, actually a few Quid-Pro-Quos and a simple aptitude test remain, but anyway, that goes without saying.

You pretty much don't need to know anything. My fiancee and I saw it the other night. She's never seen anything Star Trek before and I have no idea how I was able to convince her to go see it. While she enjoyed it and even recommended it to her parents, she felt like she was missing out on a bigger picture, that she wasn't familiar enough with Star Trek to completely understand what was going on. She said it felt like a chapter in a bigger story.

I told her she didn't need to know anything, but she still felt like she would've understood better if she'd seen any of the shows or other movies. I guess that's just something Star Trek is going to have to live with; that no matter how far back to the beginning you go and no matter how much you try to wipe the slate clean, Star Trek can't escape that it has a massive history that some people will always feel like they're lost.

The good news is, I might be able to get her to watch more Star Trek!

^And I think its awesome that the movie piques the interest of newbies and may motivate them to watch more trek.

Exactly. Most of the non-trekkies I know have got into Trek when I just turned the TV onto trek or let them watch a movie without any explanation before. If there is something they don't understand, fill them in later.

They don't need to know anything. Let them enjoy a typical action blockbuster movie with easy humor, incredible actions and good doses of cgi. If you give them something to think about, you might frightened them. (excerpt from the book: "10 Rules of Hollywood executives")

Non-trekker:"hahaha, do you see him, he's under the bed and shes getting naked hahaha".

I think even non-Trekkies who don't know about the nerve pinch get the humor out of that scene.
