He really hasn't. The movie is making more money than all the other star trek movies. Critics are fawning over the movie. Rotten Tomatoes score is off the charts. Its Box office percentage drops are well below what's normal. Very casual ST fans love it.

Here's the poll at the moment from THIS VERY FORUM, only voted on by TrekBBS members:

    Excellent 538 65.13%
    Above Average 159 19.25%
    Average 59 7.14%
    Below Average 21 2.54%
    Poor 49 5.

The assertion that his movie polarized the fanbase is wrong

Now, i'm just going to assume that you asked for a hypothetical situation in which JJ was busy doing something else and was unable to direct the next Star Trek movie.

In that case, my choice is Matthew Vaughan. He directed the fantastic "Stardust", he pulled out of X3 because he felt the script was bad (!), is a geek through and through, and is directing "Thor" and Mark Millar's "Kick-Ass" also. I knew this guy was special, when three different times during Stardust, not knowing he was the director, I remarked at how skillful and effortless some of the big stuff was directed, and made a note to find out who directed it, and was surprised to see his name pop up at the end.

Jackson Roykirk - - I would LOVE to see what Alphonso Cuaron could do with TreK! One of my favorite filmmakers. But he's so busy with other projects it's unlikely he'd take on a big FX production of any sort, especially one he didn't originate. Ditto Del Toro, who's busy with a little fantasy project in NZ for the next fw years. Jackson and Spielberg's plates are full.

In my nightmares Michael Bay directs Star Trek (PLEASE GOD NO!!!) We got enough of those kinds of movies already. I'm not terribly interested in James Cameron's vision of Star Trek. I might be in Ridley Scott's. Favreau - meh. OTOH, I'd love to see what Peter Weir would do with a Trek movie (I loved Master & Commander, as well as most of his earlier films) but I'm quite sure I'm in the minority there.

Stone Cold Sisko - Matthew Vaughn is a very interesting and apt suggestion. Stardust was underrated, but required a heckuva juggling act from its firector to balance the disparate elements of adventure, comedy, fantasy and drama. Very difficult tone to maintain.

I loved the energy and nimble visual style Abrams brought to ST XI, and his casting was brilliant. If he'll just let the editing breathe a bit, I think he's on to something here. This movie is so much more accomplished that MI3, leaps ahead IMO. I think the key to the next film(s) is/are the script(s). Can't stress that enough. And the screenwriters do seem to understand that the heart of any TOS story is the Kirk/Spock friendship. With the critical and BO success of XI, I'm hoping Abram's confidence level in both the material and his own abilities will let him tie down some things a bit better in the next one. I just don't want him to get the XII cluttered up with space junk a la Lucas.

Oh, and please bring ILM back on board.

BTW, I loved XI, flaws and all.

Abrams has earned the right to direct the next film.

You hit the nail on the head right there! We need new blood, we finally got that with Abrams who did one HELL OF A JOB on a movie that could easily have been CRAP! I say keep J.J., but lose the currant writers.

Leonard Nimoy as director...Shatner would be a good one IF Paramount would leave the budget and script alone and keep Berman off the property.

Wow imagine that. I'm a huge fan of Gilliam's work (Brazil is amongst my all time favourites as well as his work with Python), and yes it would be interesting to see it, but I wouldn't want to wish it upon the world as an actual real thing..

Oh, hell, yeah! I've been stumping for The Chin since ENT was on the air - even now, with a few more pounds and a lot more gray, Bruce Campbell would make a great starship captain. Maybe not Kirk, but he'd have been a great Archer; Bruce can act, for sure, and he's got both the physical comedy and the innate wit to carry off humor in the role when it's needed - not once did Bakula make me laugh when I was 'supposed' to. That being said, I wouldn't necessarily want Sam Raimi in the director's chair at the same time (and if Werhoeven ever gets near Trek, I will do everything in my power to sabotage the project and make sure it never sees the light of day - I'll make it my mission :scream: ).

    Steven Soderbergh.

I'd love to see what he could do with Star Trek. He's shown an affiinity for strong character development, intelligent and subtle humor, and excellent cinematography and writing. He's got broad range and ventured into the realm of dramatic sci-fi with Solaris.

Abrams did good. I'd be interested to see what Peter Jackson would have done with the Genesis planet in ST:III. I'm sure he could give us some really strange new worlds, provided someone is around to smack him in the head occasionally and tell him to pick up the pace and stop CGIing everyfrickinthing. Can you imagine a 4-disc special extended edition of a Trek movie?

I'm happy with the job Abrams has done so far. I just think he needs to slow the camera work down a bit, and make it a little less light hearted. Although I'm far from suggesting a return to TNG style seriousness.

Otherwise, Nick Mayer. I'd like to see Frakes given another shot as well. Maybe bring Manny Coto in on the writing staff.

I wouldn't mind Abrams getting a second shot.

But if I had to have a second choice, I have to agree with Admiral Bear and choose Nicholas Meyer or Jonathan Frakes. I'd go one up and add the Reeves-Stevens to supplement Orci and Kurtzman.
