Yeah. Pretty amazing when you realize that some of his more bombastic stuff in 'Duet' was him dialing it down

Ever see Harris Yulin in that 1988 horror movie Bad Dreams, where he played a doctor who actually turned out to be...well, I won't spoil it for you. But it also stars Jennifer Rubin, Bruce Abbott, and Richard Lynch as the "villain"!

Actually, it was the lovely Salli Richardson who played the dual role of Fenna/Nidell in Second Sight. I like that ep, and liked the subtle makeup job on her character, with the multiple pointed ears. I wish they had cast an African-American or Asian-American actor just once as a Vorta. As for Iggy Pop as Yelgrun, I really got a kick out of the way he growled, "Ferengi!" I find myself saying it like that when I'm bored and need to amuse myself! (Geez, what a geek I am!) -- RR

Harris Yulin is also quite funny. He played a gangster named Jerome Belasco in an ep of Frasier, who does Niles a favor, then he wants to collect on that favor from Frasier, but it all ends up blowing up in Niles' face, as he asked Belasco to intervene on his wife Maris' behalf in the first place, as she's the most notorious scofflaw in Seattle! -- RR

I always got the feeling that he was an older Vorta. That he was a "go to guy" for them in these type of situations, and was so good that he didn't have to be killed and replaced in some time... Almost like the Wolf character in pulp fiction. Seen it all, Done it all, doesn't care. He has a job to do and will do it, that's all.

That's an interesting take. It would appear to me that Vorta clones are all grown to a predetermined age when they are first created. It would seem that the age of the 'backup' clone that is kept in storage to replace the 'active' one would be reflective of the age of the 'active' clone. For example, all the Weyoun clones seemed to be roughly the same age (gaining perhaps a few years as the show ran on. ;))

I wonder, then, if Yelgrun's apparent physical age is reflective of how 'successful' the original Yelgrun was?

That is if he is one of the next clones, or if he's still the first of the line...

Also, remember that ageism is a big thing among the dominion, look at the way the other Jem'hadar treated that one which was like over 5 years old. They considered him an "honored elder" but looked down at him for not dieing already.

So an "elder vorta" would be another quandary, which adds layers to his back story in this military of "disposable solders".

Have to go with Iggy Pop as well. My next choice would be Tony Todd as older Jake Sisko.

Iggy Pop. Hands down. And as others have said, one of the best Vortas ever.

Harri yulin have been mentioned a lot, and while I love his part in Duet as well as the episode (even showed in school and did a lesson on it about how fiction can be used to reflect on real life situations), he's not unusual. He's been the guest star on lots of shows. Fantastic actor still though.

Pop was awesome as Yelgrun, and Yulin was God as Marritza. Yulin has been great in so many things actually (DS9, Buffy, 24 to name a few).

Keevan ruled as well. As did Berkoff.

McHattie is my favourite, probably. He was so smug as that Romulan. And of course, the classic quote (see my sig line).

I mean, at least Iggy played a part.

Iggy Pop was the first name that popped into my mind here. Loved him as a Vorta.

Gotta be Iggy. You could have dwelled on that casting decision for another 10 years and not outdo Iggy.

That said, if the question were best guest star, it'd have to be Yulin. The stars aligned for Duet, and Yulin's performance represented most of those stars.

I watched "Duet" for a second time because of all the raves about it in this forum. I couldn't understand the praise because the first time I saw it, I didn't remember anything about it after (like many episodes in season 1, which I found mostly dull). This time, I appreciated Yulin's performance and the big reveal at the end, but little else.

I still think it's mostly boring, but because I was paying close attention to Yulin this time (and not watching the episode at the tail end of a bunch of episodes that had made me really sick of the show already), it was a little more memorable this time. The twist at the end when it's revealed who the character really is was powerful stuff and Yulin was mesmerizingly charismatic and had fantastic dialogue in all his scenes, but the rest wasn't so good.

It reminded me of why I hated Kira until around season 3...she's just so preachy, whiny, and overbearing, and most of the episode is her bitching to people about the Cardassian prisoner, which bored the hell out of me. This episode was like "Silence of the Lambs" if everything in the movie was weak except Anthony Hopkins' performance and the ending. Yulin really carried that episode pretty much all by himself.

There are 2 stars that comes to mind when I read the OP.

Iggy Pop as the Vorta, Yelgrun in The Magnificent Ferengi
    and
Vanessa Williams as the Risian, Arandis in Let He Who Is Without Sin
