James Kirk has broken social taboos before but there are some places that even Star Trek has not yet been bold enough to go.
Star Trek was revolutionary in it's day and should be so again.
Capt. Kirk's libido should know no bounds, regardless of race, gender or species!

So what do you think? Could Star Trek possibly follow in the footsteps of Doctor Who and Torchwood in fighting prejudice and challenging perceptions or is this new Star Trek not as modern as we're told?

Old Trek had Kirk/Spock fanfic. New Trek can have Kirk/Spock/Uhura fanfic. :shifty:

You had to pick the one character that was always chasing women to be bisexual?
Wouldnt just about anyone else have made a better choice?

Besides, these movies will probably be more about the movie itself, not just a means of sending a message.

Then your definition must be pretty damn faulty.

For it to be clichéd it would have had to have been done already...

    Duh.

I think the proper TEH BABA format for a post such as this would not include all that talky stuff in the OP. All you should write is, "should he?"

I don't think Kirk would be offended or disgusted at the thought of kissing another man as he's too smart for that, but bisexual? Perhaps not.

But we're not in Kansas anymore Dorothy. Their destinies are different now.
I think it's actually perfectly in character for him to be exploratory.

Oh and definitely not with Spock. That just... ruins it.

And I also don't see why they can't tackle a big issue just cuz its a film, and besides the point of having Kirk be bi would be that it's not a big issue.

I'm of the firm believe that just as there are bisexuals out there, there are people who are 100% gay and others that are 100% straight, though cases for the extremes on either side the spectrum are rare. I wouldn't think Kirk was 100% straight, but just far enough into the scale that he isn't that attracted to men.

I don't get "TEH BABA"?
But the point of all the "talky stuff" is to justify my position on the question I posed which is I think he'd shag most things that move within a certain spectrum of attractiveness of course (the man has taste).

It would be a canon violation unless there were some explanation for how Kirk magically became a switch hitter.

    Eloquently put. Care to elaborate?
What's the point of more star trek if it isn't as brave as the original?

    Go ahead, caller. I'm listening...
I am very very VERY much for GLBT rights and plentiful and accurate depictions of them on the little and big screens.

That said, I'm going to go with a great big NO on Kirk being bi. There's never been any indication of that in the past, so I just don't think it would be right. Admittedly, this Kirk has had a little bit different history, but I even if some of these sorts of things are nurture, I've seen enough to know that genetics plays a roles, too. If we want to introduce an element of that into the core Trek characters, I'd do it with someone whose personal preferences in that regard have been explored less.

I'd be fine, for example, if it did turn out that Sulu was bi - just because we know he had a daughter, that certainly doesn't exclude the possibility, and it would be kind of a nice reflection of an aspect of the original actor.

    Or Chekov. Why not?

Something else I would have liked to have seen was
Uhura acting a little like she was influenced by the pheromones that would almost certainly have been released in the quarters she shared with Gaila (the Orion girl), even while she still fussed at her. It wouldn't even necessarily have had to mean that Uhura is gay or bi - Orion pheromones should be something special.
