For those who may not know Jonah Hex is an original character from DC Comics set in the Old West. Recently Warners underwent a reoginazation plan towards its approach to the DC comics properties. No doubt due to Marvels, successful, push of its plurality of characters recently.

    wiki
Jonah Hex is slated to start shooting at the end of the month(April '09) for release, as of now, in August 2010.

    The Cast:
    Josh Brolin = Jonah Hex
    John Malkovich = Voodo priest
    Megan Fox = Leila
Will Arnett = Union soldier who enlists Jonah's aide
Michael Shannon = Doc Cross Williams
    more to be announced......

    Directed by: Jimmy Hayward

I'm really curious to see how this one turns out. Its higher on my radar for now then Green Lantern. It seems Warners is going with some talented people in front of the camera, Fox being the eyecandy exception. Hayward is an interesting choice since Crank is all I think I know him by. As long as he turns out to be a Faverau and not a Tim Story I think we'll be alright.

I'm not familiar with the comic book but the premise sounds great. For whatever reason, I enjoy Westerns that are frakked around with by having fantasy/horror or even sci fi elements added. Brolin vs. Malkovitch should be big fun. :bolian:

Jonah Hex used to be a favorite of mine. I hope they do it justice.

So they will or they won't have the lip scar tissue? That was a big part of his visage.

Never heard of this character. Considering how Harvey "Two-Face" was done in The Dark Knight, I bet the scarring (as shown in the above pics) will be done.

This character made a brief appearance in JLU when Batman and some others went back in time to the old west. He's been a western character most of his incarnation, but there was a tremendous book that didn't last too long where he was thrust into the future. That book (simply called "Hex" while most of his stuff has been under the name "Jonah Hex") was really very cool. I'm sorry it didn't catch on.

^^ No problem. I think I *vaguely* remember this in the cartoons from when I was a kid (1970). Is that correct? Heck, I'm always open to new (to me) characters if the story is appealing.

Jonah Hex also recently appeared on the new BATMAN: THE BRAVE AND THE BOLD tv show. And his first-ever action figure came out in 2008.

Actually, his JLU appearance was in the two-parter from about 4 years back that also involved Chronos. But the character has been in print since around '70 or so.

OK, that's way out of my realm. Either way, if this is developed and it looks interesting, then I'll check it out.

I remember as a kid that I saw Hex for the first time in the Batman the animated series episode with him and Ras al Ghul. At first it was odd since it looked like BTAS was randomly doing a Western. But it was pretty cool.

Will this revive the Western genre if it does well? Maybe if this movie does well someone will make the Dark Tower books into movies? The PotC movies are hugely popular but no one seems to want to do big pirate movies even after they came out. Though a pirate movie probably is required to have a huge budget these days while a western doesn't.

Hex has always been a "Weird Western Tale", often involving some "Wild, Wild West" type SF villain or perhaps something from the occult. They could go in a LOT of different directions with him.

Although Malkovich can be a great actor, his appearance in a genre movie of late seems to be a guarantee of a stinker. Eragon, The Mutant Chronicles ... Still, Brolin is still on a bit of a post-No Country high, so hopefully this movie is more consistent with that than with Johnny's recent run of rubbish.

Cartoon Jonah of the aforementioned JLU.

Here is a page that has a very cliff notes Jonah Hex summary. His future series that lasted 18 issues is shown, the #1 issue of Hex.

For those who might like some commentary on his current series I'll provide a link and brief excerpt from the start of the piece at Comicbookresources.com.
So if you are new to the character TPTB at DC are going to be using the movie character(s) in an upcoming arc starting soon. Sounds like a good jumping on point, I'll be picking it up as I'm educating myself on the character.

Thomas Jane had wanted to play Jonah - he even went as far as to have himself made-up and photographed as him.
