^ ^ She's right. There have been a number of new fans in the VOY forum over the last couple months. I guess they are venturing out among the other forums. And there have been a number of fans revisiting VOY, as well.
Yes. I'll say for one I am new to Trek at all, so therefore Voyager. A friend who was revisiting it got me into it. And we can't be alone in relative or complete newbies. I can say for myself that, to borrow a House quote, "hostility makes me shrink up like a...can't think of a non-sexual metaphor." So the attitudes of certain members on this forum, at least from the partial representation in this particular thread, is a turn off as far as hanging around this place much, at least with non-Voyager fans. I don't care which series you prefer or not. Personal choice. But I'm not going to hang around a place where such things will be belittled for no good reason.
Here's a tip, you might want to stay off the internet because it is all like that. It is full of unintelligent and unthinking morons who think they know everything about everything and proceed to attack the things they don't understand because they don't fit into their belief that they know everything about everything. The trick is to never take things personally... and if that doesn't work then hack into their computer, find their address and send them a package full of angry bees. The demographics of this board leans in favour of DS9 and away from Voyager, and I'm sure there are people here who could write an essay as to why that is. When Janeway jumps from fourth place (where she had been languishing for weeks) to first place in one day due to a large number of new members voting for her then alarm bells start to go off in people's heads. Even the slightest hint of voter fraud against the black guy could lead to trouble. Besides, Voyager fans have it easy compared to Enterprise fans. They have a bigger stigma against them than an HIV patient at an heroin orgy.
I'm sorry you feel that way. The opinions voiced in this forum are representative of the posters who voice them and no one else. I think that, if you stick around and visit other areas of the board you'll find that Star Trek fans, like any other particular group, are a wide mix of people, some are great, some are jerks, and many, many are just average folks who enjoy the different aspects of Trek. Stick around, I think you'll find your niche.
Or MAYBE, juuussst maybe, the fabric of the universe is unraveling. Or it's simply a fun poll. Whatever.
** makes mental note to never piss off GodBen. ** I've been on this board for oh my I can't believe it's been eight years and I've seen "demographics" wax and wane. This board used to have more Janeway - indeed more female fans but that changed. It doesn't mean it can't change again. That's not meant to be a threat, just an observation. All I can tell you is another fact about the Internet - it contains more than one discussion board and all it takes is for one Janeway fan to spot the thread and spread the word to other boards with a different demographic and voila - Janeway does better in the poll. In fact, that is how I found out about the poll ironically enough. There is nothing illegal or fishy about it. Like Misfit Toy mentioned - it's all in good fun.
You know, I'm trying. Been here almost two weeks and cannot believe the negativity I see so frequently expressed. I believe in giving everything a chance, so I'm doing way more reading and not much posting, but the harsh criticism, even and especially in the Voyager threads, make me hesitate to post, and return each day. I'd like to discuss, not curse, belittle, or make unrelated, disrespectful or sexist comments out of nowhere. It's not my style and not what I want to do in my spare time, but I keep hoping I'll find more like-minded posters. We'll see.
Ouch. I'm sorry you feel that way especially as a Voyager fan in the Voyager forum. Please feel free to pm me about anything you feel uncomfortable about in there or just hit "Notify" which pretty much accomplishes the same thing.
Yes, I have been in the Voyager forums. It was the first place I went. My overall impressions aren't that positive, but I'm not going away just yet b/c I love Trek. I have 3 more weeks til the cast comes off and 8 weeks of physio on my hopefully-properly-healed-this-time right wrist tendons. I have lots of enforced sitting around to do. So far, the absolute best thing about finding this Star Trek board was getting a link off-board to some tech help for my eReader.
I just figure that there has been a sudden influx of women. Women tend to feel more of anfinity for the Janeway character.
If you use the IMG tags on this board to directly hotlink an image, please make sure it is from either a site you own or from a specific image hosting site. If you can't do this, leave it as a link.
I've been here eight years on February 20th, and my two favorite modern Treks are VOY and ENT; so it can be done. Admittedly, I did have a solid grounding in TOS for the last 40-some years, which helps. It's my sentimental favorite. People could be surprised how many males are Janeway fans; there have been a number to inhabit the VOY forum. You might not see them here.
Agreed 100%. I never found a way to connect with the Archer character. Something was missing (from my perspective and my perspective only).
What KimC said. TrekBBS members have spread a word about this poll on another message boards full of Janeway fans (gasp, there are such boards! ). So if you smell a rat, have a look under your desk... maybe you find one there.
