YouTube has acquired the global broadcasting rights for the Oscars, including in the US.

I often have a proverbial horse in the race but it's usually for special effects or cinematography, maybe score.

I’m not sure why this matters?

I imagine there's a large minority of people, especially older ones, who don't own or know how to use streaming dongles, so this could affect them.

Also, streaming uses a lot more energy than broadcast TV, I believe, so forcing everyone to stream a live event seems a tad wasteful.

I gotta agree with you. After the upteenth time some turd got best pic, I checked out. Think it was American Beauty that finally broke me of caring about them.
You could do far worse than BEAUTY.....but slightly better with FIGHT CLUB.
BEING JOHN MALKOVICH, DOGMA and BLAIR WITCH PROJECT all had notable merits as well.
1999 was a very good year.....though perhaps not 1987's match and DEFINITELY not 1992's.

Not to mention, I think a majority of the people who watch are demographically older. Those are the ones that will watch with regularity, which wouldn't be an insignificant drop when it switches over to streaming over Youtube. Like for instance, my parents will record it on the DVR every year to watch it from beginning to end, even the live-carpet with all the fashion before it starts.
