Spoilers Russell T. Davies Returns to Doctor Who as New Showrunner

They would have been better off chasing Amazon, or trying to stick to their alleged HBO deal. Now they have burned bridges, and haven’t really made themselves any better off. Some of the episodes looked glossy and amazing, but rarely did the money turn up in anything on screen that was really worth it. Both SUTEKH and Omega would have been much better served by a dude in a mask.

Double edged sword. Might not have been possible to produce the show without them.
True. But its like McCoy - finally a good era, after a long drought (the Saward and Chibnall eras, respectively) sunk the show creatively, and the plug is pulled. For Disney to expect DW to be a mega success of the Stranger Things ilk is laughable, so them pulling the rug out of an existing deal is unconscianble.

Cause that's the thing, there are still two series that DIsney initially promised alongside these two. And I preume Gatwa would've left at the end of that fourth series, provided the filming schedules complimented his other commitments (which at the rate of the first two series would've).

I dont, but i don't need to. Losing whatever extra money that the Disney Plus deal supplied just means that the show goes back to the budget levels it had from 2005 to 2022, when it did just fine.

Then don’t act like you have a fucking clue about what is going on. It is fucking tedious.

Apologies, @DigificWriter. I shouldn't have hammered you quite so hard. What you have to realize is that there are a lot of moving parts to this. Could the BBC theoretically carry the entire cost of the production? Probably, though they have finite resources. Then you have to factor in what are they going to make if they finance the production themselves. Is there a big enough market out there to make it more profitable than two or three more traditional productions that could likely be made for the same money? If Disney is getting cold feet, then that means they aren't seeing the bang for their buck that they projected.

All this is with most of the streaming world drowning red ink. I just wouldn't be so sure this particular incarnation of the series moving forward is a slam dunk.

@BillJ We don't know exactly how much money Disney Plus contributed, but the only comment that RTD made on the subject gave the impression - for me, anyway, - that it didn't actually amount to an exorbitant increase in the show's budget, which in turn gave the impression - again, for me, anyway - that the increase in budget helped, but that the show could still be easily produced without it.

If that’s the case, then it’s up to the BBC if making the show is the best use of their resources.

All we can do is wonder.
