The Price (Season 3)

Captain Zog

Lieutenant Commander
Red Shirt
Re-watched this episode tonight. The Barzan wormhole stuff and Ferengi conniving is quite good but the Troi romance plot is tiresome. I like Deanna as a supporting character but the writers always struggled to write worthwhile Troi-centred episodes (the Season 4 episode "The Loss" being a notable exception if memory serves). What did Deanna even see in Ral the negotiator? I watched "Haven" from Season 1 recently as well and same problem. Seriously - could they focus on something more interesting than Deanna's love life? An OK episode overall.

The best thing about this one is that it provided the basis for the far superior Voyager episode "False Profits".

I liked this one a lot and I remember not liking "False Profits." I thought that Ral was great manipulating everyone, especially when he tries it on Riker about Troi and Riker smirks. Ral just seemed like a charming man and he and Troi had a bit of fun but I didn't take away that it was any more than that. I love her pulling the rug out from him at the end. I think this episode better sets up DS9 with it's wormhole and watching it now feels like a trial run for that. I love Data and Geordi's wormhole trip. The only Starfleet officers to go to the four quadrants of the galaxy?
"False Profits" annoyed me because it just seems to go back to the TNG type of one-dimensional Ferengi, which to be fair I guess those guys were, but after many years of seeing different types of Ferengi on DS9 I would have preferred more nuance. I haven't seen it since 1996 so I may have a different opinion now (but I doubt it).

Mysterious Human/Betazoid hybrid empathic powers at work, especially when it involves two of them....

Yeah...she works well as a supporting character; someone to bounce ideas off like how Data goes to her for advice in Data's Day.

Face Of The Enemy is a fantastic ep imo. I kinda think after this ep that her talents were wasted as a therapist. This type of undercover operative seems to be a good fit for a Betazoid.

"Face of the Enemy" is a strong episode for sure. Reminded me of the DS9 episode "Second Skin" a bit.

heh, he also was on the Nanny as a mortuary owner who had a secret ambition to become a clown. I remember him a lot as being a lot more charming in that role.

He could play a mean Marlboro Man.

I thought McCoy played Ral really well. He was written as a creep and it's how it came across. It's not my favorite episode though, as I did find the Farangi annoying.
