I am really thankful that so far, Beverly isn’t just the vessel for producing Picard’s son and then pushed to the side. That is totally something that would have happened in 90s trek.
I’m sure the JLP/Jack relationship will continue to be a focus but I hope she continues have a strong role and gets some good character development.

It was interesting to see that, after 20+ years out of Starfleet and apparently becoming independent badass doctor, she fell right back into sync with Riker and others solving the problems on the bridge.

Except that they've got rooms already filled with breathable air. It wasn't going to become unbreathable for some time. The drama over switching life support off was a bit much. They'd be out (as happened) or their plan failed before running out of breathable air.

Agreed. And they can also beam aboard other Changelings and delete the necessary transporter records to keep them secret. You'd think the transporter would detect a Changeling. No problem with a Changeling at the controls!

    From earlier in the thread:
This is the best explanation yet of the (otherwise inexplicable and ridiculous) independent holodeck power source thing. It makes far more sense than the "reason" advanced on Voyager back in the day, and it's better than what they came up with during the episode. Each to their own but it works for me.

I almost did that too. But I watched it again and wow, it just really hit me. It was that good. But I understand your reasoning completely!

Like Riker recalling watching his son's casket being lowered into what felt like infinity. He runs and ends up getting crushed in the nebula with apparently no way out. I mean, no wonder he just gave up! But his turnaround at the end upon not only escaping but witnessing the birth . . . moving.

Great journey with Jack. Who claimed to be a true loner. But then seeing how the crew came together. You could see the wheels turning in his head. And the stuff between Jack and Picard.

Seven and Shaw's growing respect. So much happened and all those payoffs felt totally earned. Great combination between action and characterization. And I'm not one who usually gushes about TV episodes. But, for me, this one landed just right.

I can buy the holodeck having a separate power source that can be independent so they can use it for sheltering if all else fails. That's not the problem.

However, they would make it so that it could also be switched to supply power to somewhere else for safety reasons if needed. Cross circuit it over like they can do with everything else. It's the inability to do that when they want to that isn't believable. If that wasn't built in, all they'd need to do is run a line over. But the capability would be built in. I mean, they apparently do that for every other system on the ship, including life support.

I gave the episode a 10, so I didn't dock it for that. But it's a stupidity that takes me right out of the story.

Oh definitely. I didn't even ding the episode for it. Gave it a 10! But it does deserve an eye roll at least!

    Ah yes, of course!

I guess Matalas has confirmed she is a Changeling and doesn't have a special hand. So, deranged? Or maybe diseased as suggested by the fleshy SFx? Undoubtedly, we'll find out!

Absolutely agreed. :bolian: And unless I'm mistaken she was wearing a blue lab coat, too. :D

All it needed was one line:
“Oh, we’ll freeze to death long before we suffocate” and problem solved with the life support

My point was that if there was such an independent power source and we buy either of the reasons given for running the holodeck on it, then why not life support as well? Life support trumps doctors and psychological comfort.

I’m putting “Bev is a Changeling” back on the table — the changeling on board Titan took over a Transporter Officer.

But as someone said, that would make the whole conversation between Picard and Beverly about Jack… meaningless?

Not if it was the Changeling twenty years ago that he had a Rhumba with.
