Spoilers Star Trek: Picard 3x02 - "Disengage"

I am a bit confused by the behavior of her relatives. I always assumed that Raffi first became addicted because no one believed her that Romulans were responsible for the Synth Uprising and these forces caused her to lose her security clearance and her family to subsequently abandon her . Actually, her son should apologize to her. She was right and was also rehabilitated after the events of season one.

 

Molly O'Brien was the rare exception, not the rule.

 

Another 9.

Despite all the tropes and the liberal tossing around of the Idiot Ball, I like it. I liked this episode more than last weeks overall (still not a 10 for me though.)

Loving this new take on the TNG Universe because we have BOTH a Universe and TNG characters being written portrayed more like they would be if they were in the TOS era (Read acting like actual real relatable Human beings and not the emotionally well adjusted mannequins they were portrayed as 99% of the time during the TNG TV series run circa 1997-1994. I'm sure GR is rolling in the grave and Rick Berman is shaking his head and rolling his eyes if he's watched any of the PICARD S3 episodes. But yeah, this TOS era fan LOVES this version of the TNG characters and Universe.)

As for certain Ep. 2 elements:

- Jack IS Picard's son, and not a clone of Jack Crusher - get used to it folks. Riker recognizes it immediately (and so did Picard, but he just doesn't want to admit it to himself.)

- As for Shaw, I don't care for the inconsistent writing of his character. He's perfectly happy to let Riker and senior Picard die, until 7 of 9 says: "...or be known for letting two Starfleet Legends die..."); and he's also willing (and still IMO in character when he is willing to trade Jack Crusher to save the 500 in his crew; BUT suddenly once it's reveled Jack is Admiral Picard's son - SUDDENLY he seems to be okay with sacrificing his ship and crew? (Hello Idiot Ball...because yes, if he's not on board with the rest of the TNG characters and 7 of 9, theirs either no further story; OR Picard and Riker have to mutiny on an actual Starfleet vessel directly that adds a whole other can of worms in the aftermath although it would be a nice callback to the 'stealing of the Enterprise' in STIII:TSFS.)

- I was never a ST: VOY fan (still think it's the worst Trek series), gave up watching it regularly after S1 but I've since seen some of their later seasons episodes with 7 of 9 and the ST:VOY finale Endgame. But yeah, I've really liked the 7 of 9 character version they have had in PICARD since S1 and Jerry Ryan comes across as a much better more nuanced actress then she ever did in ST: VOY (IMO). Continuing to enjoy her character.

- LOVED The appearance of Worf (and honestly was expecting him to show up to save Raffi as soon as the Ferengi showed her the Romulan's head); and the fact he just unceremoniously beheaded the gangster Ferengi in one clean stroke. Worf IS a Klingon version of Pei Mei (of Kill Bill and Chinese Kung Fu Cinema fame); and yeah, love it. (Gotta wonder WHEN Picard will be a hypocrite again and dress him down for stuff like this as he did all through the TNG TV series whenever Worf did something completely valid WRT Klingon culture. )

- And I know Michelle Hurd is a good actress, but yeah, they're just making her the most trope-ish of the new PICARD cast and really not giving her much to really work with, and that's sad (IMO).

Still, liked it overall <--- And had the TNG TV series treated the main characters like relatable Human beings as Terry Matalas and Co. are doing here in PICARD, I probably would have liked the original TNG more.

But that's me - and if you are a huge fan of the original TNG series, I'm sure many of those hard core fans are beside themselves going: "WTF is THIS??!!"

(I can only say: Now you guys know and can now understand the reaction many a TOS hard core fan had when TNG hit the airwave in 1987. )

 

And even Molly aged faster than she should have for the expediency of television storytelling. She was born in 2368 and already preschool age within DS9's first few seasons.

 

With minor genetic alterations, I expect the average human to all easily live past 100 y/o and have the physical body of a 20/21st century 50 y/o by the time they're 128 y/o.

Your body won't creek, it won't be so weakened that you can't enjoy life.

Imagine being 128 y/o and moving around like a modern 50 y/o.

Enjoying a VERY long youthful body and mind period after you graduated from adolescence to young adult-hood.

Your outter appearance and physical capabilities would not 100% match your actual age, but that's by design thanks to the miracles of modern medicine and genetic engineering.

People have a tendency to be stubborn and not want to admit that they were wrong

 

This just really looks and feels to me like the North Tower of the WTC being imploded then dumped over Manhattan.

 

I'm sorry, I just don't buy the idea of 23rd-25th century people chilling and lounging to 20th century classic rock.

Starting into E2 and that part jumped out at me.

Admirals have four 4 pips too. Two sets of them, sure, but not five.

 

This has merit, but I hope it's not true because it's super creepy.

 

Why not? Lots of people in the 21st century listen to popular music from the 18th century.

 

I still listen to Gregorian chants, classical music, and opera that are from that era.

 

Sorry, you green-blooded stoics, but I for one like a hammy villain!

 

I totally believe people will be listening to rock music 400 years from now.

But it will be much better songs that aren't so on the nose.

 

I like Vadic way more than I like Jack Crusher at the moment.

Just finished watching the episode for the second time. It's insane just how dense with detail these episodes are.

Really loving the natural diversity of the Titan crew from period appropriate species. In addition to the Vulcan science officer, the Bajoran tactical officer, and the Haliian operations/communications officer, we now have a Trill doctor and an Orion nurse plus the varied extras. It's not full of aliens with crazy makeup we've never seen before.

The "guy" from the bar / welcoming officers at attention in the corridor outside the shuttle bay is in the transporter room... but also looks a lot like the human guy working with Sneed. Maybe they look alike? Or maybe it's two different people... and the guy from the bar is now with Sneed? I wish P+ was much better with freeze framing and zooming, will need to wait for the screen caps. But if they are two identically looking people in different places at the same time...

That's a great theory to explain the something extra is going on there.

Terry Matalas has promised an organic explanation for that.

TNG is what got me into Star Trek. It's probably my "most favorite" series nostalgia wise, but I'd argue DS9 is the "best" series. For me this feels like an organic evolution that takes into account the passage of time, separation, and differing interests, not a revisionist rupture that is using cheap melodrama to fill time.

I mean, maybe there are people that solely like TNG and not DS9 or even VGR... PICARD season 1 is the rupture season for me. And this is an incredibly welcome 180 degree turn.

 

I wish all the Flag Officers / Admiralty would use "Stars" instead of "Pips".

The traditional Five-Pointed Star would work well for anybody who is a "Flag Officer".

That would easily distinguish them from regular "Line Officer / Field Officer" who wears pips.

 

Yeah, this feels like the TNG characters in the DS9 world. I think one of the themes is that those seven years on the Enterprise-D were a particular golden period for everyone, which can never be repeated.
