Okay everyone. First, I need to apologize for being late.
Second, this contest will be for avatars that are Musicals that started on the stage then went to the big screen. I've no idea if this has been done before, but I hope not. Remember your avatar cannot be more than 200x200 and in case of a gif it cannot be more than 200x200 and no bigger than 1MB. No more than 3 entries per person. Keep it SFW. No entries will be accepted after February 5, 2023. The poll will be up, hopefully on February 6, 2023.

    As always have fun.

Welp... So much for entering my actual current avatar (Grease).

I hate to complain, but has anyone considered that these contests might get more participation if the people running them didn't come right out of the gate with their own (often multiple) entries?

It almost seems like a recusal by the contest runners might not be a bad idea.

If I were to enter (which I have no interest in doing), my lone entry would be based on 1776. Because my two other favorite musicals (Merrily We Roll Along and Pippin) have never been made into movies.

That, I think, is a discussion worth having.

Having the thread poster not participate does have pros and cons worthy of debate.

@the G-man perhaps you could open a thread for debate.

I would beg to differ. The whole point of winning is to get to do avs for the next contest---for me, anyway. Maybe the winner should only post one av at the start, and not post the others until a few people have joined in?

I happen to have a great av for that. You can use it if you like.

Respectfully, I thought the point was (or at least should be) for the previous winner to come up with a fun and challenging contest for other posters and give them a chance to express their creativity within the category established. Ultimately, it just seems like "ginning the system" for the winner to both set the rules AND come out of the gate with multiple entries before anyone else even knows what the category is.

^which is why I suggested that perhaps the winner only post one at the start.

That's a good idea. I think a waiting period for the thread poster to post more avatars would be a better idea Maybe the one who starts the thread can only post one avatar and then must wait 24 hours before posting any others. The only problem I see is that there may be more like me who come up with an idea and the avatars to post at the same time and will be able to quickly post those other ideas, if not already taken, the moment they are able There's no guarantee that anyone's particular post idea, or current avatar, would not be used by the one who started the thread in either their first post or delayed post.

There is always a time specified as the official cutoff for submissions. Maybe there should be an official start time for the submission period as well. A time that is a few hours after the posting of the the contest itself.

That would be similar of my idea. No one posts until 24 hours after the posting of the new game.

Personally, I would prefer that the one who creates the new post gets to put up one avatar, then wait 24 hours to post more. The winner of the previous game should get a little more than having to create a new post.

Don't let the debate stop those of you who haven't posted, to post. There are plenty of Rodgers and Hammerstein, Lerner and Loewe, Andrew Lloyd Webber, Sondheim, and others that have had their stage musicals adapted for the big screen.

I think it's a bit up to the poster. Personally, I try to give other users time to enter, but I also sometimes recognize that some themes are a bit hard to explain without examples. There's been a few times when, after having waited about a day nobody had entered, but once I posted my own entries, there suddenly came quite a few others joining in. That said, I often try to go for more obscure entries, anyway.

So, I'm fine with waiting for a day, but that's not always the problem.

    That said:

Thanks, but as far as avatars go, I think I'll stick with either that old vacation picture from the organ loft at St. Mark's Seattle (1969 Dirk Flentrop, subsequently upgraded by Paul Fritts; VERY responsive to touch), or maybe switch to a picture of me working the Linotype at the Printing Museum.

:shrug:Use it as your own third entry. Wasn't really interested in entering. But thank you very much anyway.

My five cents on avatar contest rules: Within the overall general rules used across the whole forum (size, theme, etc.), it should be up to the host to decide on specifics beyond that.

For instance, I specify non-animated avatars when I host simply because I find it godawful hard to deal with a screenful of jerky, repetitive images. This is why I rarely enter or vote anymore, since there seems to be a bias in favor of these repetitive animated entries, not to mention angry demands to explain why I want non-moving entries if I should happen to win and host the next contest.

I can think of lots of possibilities to enter, but won't, if I'm expected to make them the kind that literally give me a headache to look at.

Oh, and a further five-cent opinion... I see nothing wrong with multiple entries of the same musical, as long as they're not identical to someone else's entry (ie. Tevye's "If I Were A Rich Man" is iconic, but there are lots of other great images of Fiddler on the Roof that could be used).

I enjoy looking at animated GIF avatars, and I have fun creating them. But I wouldn't refuse to enter if the contest runner specified no animated avatars. Your contest, your rules.
