Scooby Doo's Velma Is Getting Her Own Show Starring Mindy Kaling

Having the classic Scooby characters be different races and have them be gay can work. With Velma, it's long overdue (Team Hot Dog Water). This show just hates the characters, hates Scooby Doo as a concept, and hates the audience for watching it. Worst of it isn't funny, it just seems to think that being meta and having the characters do shocking things is hilarious. The cast could work too, they're just on an awful show.

 

As disappointing as it is, I'm relieved that my impression of the trailer wasn't off: It simply didn't look good.

Which is a shame since I loved the concept, the animation style, and Mindy Kaling. Even that clip that was released prior to the trailer looked promising.

 

And yet, the producers are hard at work on a season 2. By the way, I've been watching the various versions of Scooby Doo from at least the last 10 years (including series, straight-to-DVDs and the CG feature) It wouldn't surprise me to hear that most of the nay-sayers haven't seen one minute of Scooby Doo since they were kids (oh, they probably watched the 2 films written by James Gunn)

 

I've sampled enough to wonder why you think this is a salient point. What are you getting at?

 

It got a large amount of viewers who seemed to just be hate watching it, I find the whole thing funny. They hated it so much they made it a success.

 

It means this is yet again the bellyaching of many people who can't handle that what gave them the feels back when they were kiddies has changed and isn't for THEM anymore...if they haven't watched any of the dozens of versions over the last few decades, they are just outraged over the "loss" of their rose-coloured memories...
I'm sure a lot of "fans" back in the 60s couldn't handle this psychotic-looking Batman drawn by Neal Adams was replacing the fuzzy, warm and funny Adam West version who was preceded by the lighthearted Dick Sprang one...
Some guys here wrote: "oh, this new Velma show is terrible, and is this, and is that!" yet NEVER going into detail WHY it is terrible...

Attractive Teens have been getting their brains removed since the pilot. Steps have been taken to protect the most attractive teens. This week we found out that Shaggy's grandmother was a brain surgeon working on Scoobi: The Special Cover Operations Brain Initiative. A government program to put soldier brains into the bodies of America's enemies to create the perfect spies.

Yup.

Scooby Doo is logically therefore eventually is going to be a dog with a human brain.

I watched a bit. I didn't find it too funny. Wasn't a huge fan of the animation as well. I'm not opposed to different versions of the Gang. Since the 1990's they have been doing various versions of them. Their relationships have been a bit more adult etc. My favorite non traditional version of Scooby so far is Scooby Doo Mystery incorporated. The characters were more well defined and the animation was very well done. I do believe (except for the one where they were little kids) SDMI was the biggest departure from the more traditional drawings and characters up till Velma.

 

Am I crazy, or didn't DC comics do something like with a "post apocalyptic" Scooby series?

 

I hate it. As far as I'm concerned, it has earned every bit of the user bombing it has received (except the bigots. Fuck the bigots).

I watched the first 4 episodes so it could have a really good chance of engaging my interest, but it's just an awful, awful show. The writing is what happens when you let Boomers tell Millennials what jokes are still funny, and then mixing in a sarcastic "woke" style of writing that actually tongue-in-cheek (poorly) mocks current social trends. It's a self-parody that laughs at its own "clever" jokes.

I was honestly ready to check out after "unlike most sluts, she was a slut that didn't deserve to die" was the lovely piece of dialogue being said by a high school student about a murdered classmate at her funeral. Also, the pointless sex and shower scenes of what are supposed to be high school kids, you know, minors, just really irks me. After the 4th episode, I couldn't take it anymore, and I haven't watch anything sense. The far superior "Mystery, Incorporated" series which only got two seasons should have outlasted this show.

Having read plenty of interviews in the interests of "why would someone greenlight this?!" I found that all of this negative review press just encourages them, because hate watching is still views, and any discussion around the show is seen as good, even if the discussion is "who the fuck thinks this is good?!"

The show exists for shock value, that's all. I would wager they're trying to be the Howard Stern/Bill Maher of TV shows. I also figure that the show was an original concept, but that it was shot down by studio execs, so the producers (of which Mindy Kaling is one) slapped the cheapest IP on it that would still get attention and make it easier to get approved by said studio execs, and so we got this horrid show as a result: the middle school kid wearing all black with the "baby in a blender" shirt who just says "you don't know me, I do what I want" over and over again like he's the baddest motherfucker in the school, when everyone's just laughing or eye-rolling.

It will, of course, be renewed, because we live in hell world.

 

The only thing shocking about Howard Stern since about 2012 is just how boring and staid he is. It's Larry King style celebrity interviews with F bombs.

 

True, I refer more to back when Howard was in full form.

 

Velma has become my guilty pleasure. It's not good, but I don't find it as unwatchable as others, and the Velma/Daphne love story is cute.

What does strike mas as weird about Velma is that it's got this weird mix of jokes that are told from a left-wing perspective and jokes told from a right-wing perspective. One second, they'll do jokes that pre-suppose that gay identities are legitimate, and the next minute they'll do jokes like, "Teens are oversensitive about tolerance" or "you can't tell edgy jokes anymore because of Me Too." It's weird. It's going for the Harley Quinn series vibe, but it's like the show has no consistent point of view in which to ground its humor the way Harley Quinn does.

 

That was funny, but he makes a good point about hate watching. I watched 4 episodes to really give it a shot, I could barely get through the 3rd and 4th ones. When I was done, I left my rating on IMDB, Rotten Tomatoes, et. al., and that was that. I have no desire to watch any more. Life's too short to watch a show you just want to hate. Too many good shows to watch instead.

So it's frustrating when the show will get renewed, because I expect this will spur others to produce similar shows with well known IPs. We had to deal with the introduction of reality TV (that still plagues me), so now we get hate watch TV. Shows with the lowest, shittiest critic and audience scores getting renewed year after year. Urgh.

 

Haven't seen it, but If I were the IP holder, I'd be seriously worried right now about the kind of perception this would have on the overall IP. Like, if a kid were to really like Scooby Doo and want to see more of it and stumbled upon this, it'd be highly inappropriate. This is why it might be a bad idea to make an adult cartoon out of a popular saturday morning cartoon.
