That's an incredible find! It's a bit surreal to see the motion shots of the ships so detailed and crisp before they got dulled and blurry by the vfx passes.

What kills me is how great it would have been to see some—hell, all of them—in episodes somewhere. It would have added greater variety to what we’re already familiar with.

Wow! That's pretty cool. Wonder if this can be used in a re-remastering project?

I’ve long had a strong idea for how I’d remaster TOS, particularly the ship exterior shots. It sure as hell wouldn’t look like TOS-R.

IF they’d had just a bit more time and money we might have gotten to see some of those shots.

If I were doing a new remaster I’d make a point of working much of that never seen footage into it somewhere.

Curious - were these never seen footage only recently discovered/released?

Many of these shots were of the older versions of the ship—the larger navigational antenna, the reshaped bridge, the domes missing from the aft end of the warp nacelles. Remember how unusual cinema quality VFX were at that time for a TV show. We've all read the histories, how the post work was becoming unwieldy.

With the exception of the new matte paintings (now referred to as scene extensions), many of the TOS-R digital VFX were cringe-worthy. The artists who worked on Star Trek Continues could have taught CBS Digital a thing or two. They managed to maintain the "look" of the original with all their CGI work.

Rewatching this I think this footage has been around for awhile because I think I recognize some still shots that could have been taken from this footage.

A couple of the shots do reveal how unfinished the port side is, but then properly lit and seen on a 1960's era CRT television it might not have been that apparent.

It's still mouth watering stuff, though.

That's exactly where a bunch of these shots come from. They're in the "Visualizing the Fantastic" half-hour featurette.

Fascinating! :vulcan: I had no idea any of these original FX film elements still survived.

Cool! I read on some Amazon reviews that the featurette is in SD even on the Bluray version. If true that is a bummer :(

Considering how the series mixed all the different versions of the ship it wouldn't bugged me one bit to see this extra footage used :)

I will have to look again. I recall some, but not all those shots from the BluRays.

Thats very cool to see. Its definitely of its time (I don't miss the model work while watching TOS Remastered, which is my preferred way of watching TOS), but its still cool to see raw footage.

While much of the original fx footage in TOS doesn’t hold up as well as the live action-footage I still find the cgi work of TOS-R horribly jarring. It takes me right out of it because I can clearly see the aesthetic and creative choices are at odds with the live-action footage—they’re not the same.

I would follow what some fans have already been doing. They’re using modern resources to recreate TOS’ look, but as if it were clean and free of 1960’s production compromises.

This could be the subject of another thread and I’m not interested in reigniting the pro/con argument of the cgi work of TOS-R.

You were the one who brought TOSR up in the first place. :rommie:
