James Cameron's Avatar Sequels Possible Titles Revealed

Perhaps the worst possible example you can give for the current generation not having any interest in old stuff.

 

Ooof - then we will most likely not see a third movie. I just can't believe this is still popular enough to warrant such bank at the box office.

I will definitely follow the news about this one when it releases, in the worst case people will lose their jobs, especially the person who thought it would be a wise idea to hand over such a sum of money just for one movie.

 

We probably will see the third film since they filmed it at the same time as the second, unless they pull a Batgirl on it.

 

Seems very risky at this point. I mean, the market has undeniably changed since he's had the idea to make multiple movies. A movie with that pricetag, let alone multiples, is crazy. It's a big ask at this point. I'm very skeptical that it will break even, especially now that the pricetag has been revealed. Sure, James Cameron is a successful director with a lot of hits under his belt, but If I were the studio I'd seriously be reassessing the viability of these movies.

I hear the overseas market is ripe for these, with the first movie having made more money there than domestically, but even then, the movie would have to pull in crazy amounts of profit. I haven't even heard if we're getting 3D out of it, and even if we did, I don't think there's much of a market for it anymore, glasses or not.

 

Exactly. What does James Cameron have that the younger generation hasn't been exposed to already in some form?

Why would they care about about a sequel from a movie that came out in 2009?

 

Not really. As I said I work with a lot of teens and younger people, and have done for a while. (I'm not the high school janitor in The Breakfast Club btw )
And yeah they'll say they like Stranger Things, so I'll ask like "oh cool, so have you seen a lot of what it's inspired by then? You know, Goonies, ET, Terminator, Aliens, Stand By Me, The Thing, Close Encounters, etc etc"
And they haven't got a clue. You may as well be speaking Bangladeshi. And they're not interested either.

As someone else mentioned, you only have to look at the huge number of "reacts" accounts there are on YouTube. Young people haven't seen or heard of any of that stuff, and are only watching it through recommendations.


I'm also a singleton and use dating apps from time to time. Nearly all the women I meet say they like Netflix and Stranger Things, but again you ask if they get those kinda references and nearly all don't and have never seen them.

Just my experiences dude. Just like an awful lot of people like Tarantino movies, but do you really think all the Average Joe's know all those martial art samurai, 70s cinema, blaxploitation etc homages?

 

But Avatar II isn't from the '80s or '90s. It's from three weeks in the future. Using a popular throwback as an example of modern stuff people like instead of throwbacks, when you're actually citing modern stuff (including throwbacks) people like instead of actual old stuff, is a non-sequitur.

 

Ah, maybe a mix up, it was because we were talking about the name James Cameron. And yeah sure they'll know Avatar 1 and Titanic probably. But I was just saying they wouldn't know the big 80s & 90s movies he's known for.
ie. Us guys on this board of course when we hear that name think of Aliens/Terminator etc, and what a "James Cameron movie" is. I was just saying most young people now wouldn't think like that.

 

Ah, okay, I thought you were predicting the movie wouldn't do well because Cameron is passé.

 

Well, half of it was a semi rant about the kids I work with who don't know decent movies

I know it's not just "the kids of today" though, the younger generation has always preferred new things over their parents generation of course. Still, it happens a lot. That kind of ignorance.
I actually just matched with a 31 year old woman on Bumble only a few hours ago (I'm 38.) And in my bio I put I love 80s music & movies. And her first message to me was "I don't know anything about the 80s, I was born in 1991! lol"

Like that attitude has just always bugged me. I mean I was born 1984, but I have heard of Queen Victoria, Hitler and Genghis Khan you know.
I often hear people of any age say things like "That film's older than me!" like that means they somehow can't watch it. I find it a bizarre thought process.

Yeah, all the reports I read said we won't see anything beyond 3 if it and 2 aren't successful, so it sounds like 3 is pretty much guaranteed, and the franchise's future will be decided after that.
I guess I'm weird for a younger (35) person, I love watching older movies and TV shows. I watch older movies all the time, and lately I've been watching tons of old shows on the channels like MeTV, Cozi, H&I, and Antenna TV.

 

That remains to be seen after Avatar 2 is released.

To be honest - throw enough money at a movie and it will look gorgeous. With money you can get the best designers, CGI artists, composers etc., it's one of the awards where you can actually increase your chances to get awards the more money you have and are able to hire the right people.

Cameron doesn't hold a name with today's young audience, too much time has passed and nearly an entire generation grew up with Marvel and DC movies, Avatar and Caneron have a steep uphill battle ahead of them to get relevant again.

 

Does Cameron even have to be a "name" to a younger generation to succeed?
I don't even think they pay attention to who directs a movie anymore. That's not the draw like how it used to be. Even a superstar actor isn't generally the draw like they used to be in days past.

Who directed Top Gun 2? I don't even know (and I'm generally up on these things). And it did pretty alright.

When people say it will do well because it's James Cameron, it's not because of the name recognition. It's because he simply delivers. Avatar 2 will do well, I have little doubt.

 

Do you realize how career/studio ending catastrophe that would be? Scrapping a 200 million plus movie? No freaking way.

 

I don't think that matters. It's a spectacle which is more appealing in this MCU CGI fest driven cinematic world.

 

If this movie doesn't do as well as they'd hope, my guess is that if the 3rd already in the bank, they would likely decide to release it as a streaming exclusive. Either way, they'll have to find a way to recoup their costs.

Found merch at Toyworld Wellington - NZ today - which looked great!

The Seawasp looks like a nice upgrade of the Scorpion, for the RDA, while the submersible ‘Crab’ vehicle looks fantastic!

Speaking of which - there were no Scorpion Gunships on the shelves - everything else but that.

No biggie though, as I still have my Mattel larger version - which is a lovely vehicle (for 3 3/4 inch figures).
