Barclay was right about certain things in Next Generation

Because some if not many of us might think that holodeck could be used to satisfy some sexual fantasies might there be severe consequences if someone uses someone's image in their creations?
On the other hand some people might want to be a part of that kind of program?

 

Some people wouldn't object to being a part of, say, a training program, such as being the holo-tutor for a class in their specialty, as some people do better with an interactive learning experience.

This. And the show agrees with you, because that's exactly what happened with Geordi and Leah Brahms.

 

I've brought this up before, can't remember where... Even if you don't give clearance for your likeness to be used in holoprograms that are distributed through mainstream channels, chances are that some, ahem, enterprising individuals would find ways to do so anyway.

The silence that I've heard in this thread has led me to believe that a few individuals consider Reg's pre-intervention course of action to have been justifiable.

 

People think many things are justifiable. The present-day incomplete and contradictory evidence, and our lack of complete understanding of human development ("Do video games foster an inclination toward violence?") can make it hard to prove one way or the other.

 

Vic Fontaine made it sound like he was the one who made the holographic singer who resembled Kira, using her likeness from Bashir's spy programme.

The fact that Deanna was miffed about a relatively tame (at least, as far we saw) holographic avatar made in her image leads me to believe that she wouldn't be terribly thrilled about stumbling across Reg giving "her" the ole' one-two.

So, they made a thing about how realistic a Kira hologram it was, not that it *was* a Kira hologram.

On the other hand, deliberately making a Kira hologram less realistic than it could be also has its dangers. (In this case, by Kira herself, putting Quark's head onto it (Meridian, early S3):

TIRON: Quark! I will ruin you for this, Quark.
QUARK: You mean you didn't like the programme?
TIRON: I don't know how, I don't know when, but I will ruin you.

He certainly tried his very best. First as Brunt, targeting Quark specifically (from late S3 onwards), later as Weyoun (from S5 onwards), targeting the entire Alpha Quadrant, presumably just to make sure Quark had nowhere to run.

Yup. He did create the simulation and wanted a personal facsimile created, not liking just a robot so he asks the computer to integrate her known personality and accepting the somewhat impressive 9.37% margin of error... he finally realizes it when CompuBrahams gives a shoulder rub out of nowhere and he says it's inappropriate. The episode also ends on syrupy schmaltz that's almost if not as bad if not worse as a particular season 2 episode*, since Leah is now spouting how every time Geordi touches the engine he's touching her. Geordi's mighty quick to forget the computer is basing this on logs he can't directly read, and no sequel was necessary*** for him or the audience to figure it out so why would the script "go there" in terms of making this so off the wall? At least "Pen Pals" was trying to be charming... not creepy****.


* Pulaski showing Sarjenka a conch that emits a tone depending on who holds it. Pulaski erases her mind. Data teleports down with Sarjenka, after stealing the conch. Data places conch in Sarjenka's hand. Data beams up. Sarjenka wakes up, sees a strange conch, and picks it up. Conch emits tone. Sarjenka remembers everything and ends up in a psych ward for the rest of her life**.

**** and in both cases, a computer was at fault for causing the problem. Computers far more advanced than Daystrom's M-5! And one of them has legs! Which Yar more than appreciated!! Eww!! Which reminds:

It does make one wonder how Sarjenka ever explained the conch and whether it might have caused a PD violation of some sort down the line...

Yeah, there are some scenes where the score makes me want to puke up that viscous pancake topping... never thought I'd say this, but even that is better than the "symphony of farting frogs" season 5 started... but not by much.

 

It would be disconcerting to go into an operation and wake up with better facial recognition ability and better ability to detect people's unspoken emotions and thought but with less ability to think through electronic circuit design or math without writing more steps down, even if I wanted such abilities. Maybe the operation could give you the insight into other people without losing any abilities. I'd still find it scary to get new ability suddenly. I would be freaky to see someone's face and know who it is instantly without thinking about all the people I know and their physical parameters, something many people say they can do. I would want to try it, but I would want to be able to turn it off if I hated it.
