This choice might be more outrageous than Okona himself...

    But saving "Sarek" next.

Sir Patrick Stewart's performance in his quarters alone is worth the save. One of the best of the show.

Never mind the fact it was a great episode in itself.

But this could be too outrageous for even Okona...

Jetrel is a powerful episode that I just noticed on the list. Neelix having to deal with the man responsible for the death and destruction of his homeworld is done well. James Sloyan playing Jetrel is his usual fantastic self.

Mudd's Women is out. I know it's not exactly en vogue and it likely never will be again, but it is interesting as an artefact of it's time. We should watch the stupid ways we behaved in the past sometimes to remind us to be better now.

My next choice may be Outrageous.

Well, I was late for this one.

Be that as it may, Deja Q is a no brainer save. John de Lancie is at his snarkiest and most hilarious, but he shows the potential for character growth.

I'll like Tom Paris, but he's not the reason I'm saving LDS: "We'll Always Have Tom Paris". No, 'The Mistress of the Winter Constellations' is! Plus, we get to see some Tailheads/Chandir at Starbase Earhart, and T'Ana in that box at the end :luvlove:

Late to the party! Can't stay, either, so I'll just grab an hors d'oeuvre (ooh, cheese puffs!) and a quick vote while I'm here....Let's make it "Caretaker," as that's one of my favorite Trek pilots and does a great job of setting up what the series was supposed to be.

Cogenitor. Dear Doctor might have been a disastrous attempt at showing the rationale for the Prime Directive, this later effort was better in that regard. While I don't agree with Archer's decision, I sympathize with his predicament.

Sidestepping a few clunker lines and double entendres about penalty boxes,

TNG, Season 1: "Hide And Q"

Still has its share of mojo, the archetype of Trelane is done to perfection with the character of Q, and a few scenes that make up for the schlock:

Q trying to lure Riker is something of an interesting plot idea - something that simply couldn't have been done with Trelane, much less TOS. Now imagine the mystery aspect ramped up and this made as a two-parter, it's a worthy enough story idea that needed to be fleshed out instead out neatly Bradybunched away after the self-contained episode ended.

As always, DeLancie nails the role and makes it his own. I'd love to have been observing the casting sessions from actors, but it's safe to say they chose well.

The incidental music encroaches "loud" at times, but stays short of being over the top bombastic. It's rather well done, and certainly cinematic. If nothing else, even the worst season 1 episodes have some impressive musical arrangements.

The gift scenes stood out to me and have some weight to them, as had prior scenes of Q'ified Riker (Riqer?) not being able to save the girl's life and Riqer fuming to Jean-Luc as a result (complete with first-name basis)... granted, some kids might want to be an adult sooner, but while the Q have a different perception of time to humans, the human perception of time actually makes this akin to an odd sort of robbery. On the plus side, Geordi's reaction to him is just as appreciative as his reaction to both the planet and to Yar, whom he had revealed some repressed emotions toward earlier in the season - so there is a nice tidbit of continuity. Had Yar not been killed off, even I must concede that the attempt of what is known as "shipping" might have worked. Then again, his being socially inept but still having friendships (Data, engineering staff, et al) and coaching others (Barclay) had greater importance IMHO...

Even the Roddenberryism of the oinkyboink (read: Worf's gift from Riqer) comes across more as truer mature sci-fi and not some of the weird stuff season 1 put out, such as in "Justice"...

Season 3 had its share of improvements, but I opine that set lighting was not one of them; the shadow detail on display is so much more artistic than the bleach blanketed floodlighting... and I forgot to Photoshop sunglasses on that season 3 bridge crew shot...

I'm going to save TNG: "Datalore". It was an early favourite that arguably turned me into a TNG fan as a kid, and one of the few high point in an otherwise famously lacklustre first season. Plus Brent Spiner is always great at chewing the scenery.

It's an oddball with some very clunky dialogue at times, right down to Data - at the end of the story after Lore is dispatched - saying "Yes sir, I'm fine" and nobody flinches - what with this story making it official that Data cannot use contractions, despite the thousands of times he'd already done so prior to*. Oops. (I'd read somewhere it was a joke kept in, since nobody believed this show would last...) That said, Lore is suitably psychotic, Spiner hits the scope and scale of sheer malevolence out of the ballpark, the lighting - again - is masterfully done, and the music is almost too good for this episode. That's how great it is. The direction and camerawork too are well above spectacular, especially for season one, but in Trek in general - everything comes together to make the story more than the sum of its parts on parchment.

    * and since! :devil:

    :luvlove:

Oh yeah! Lore going around and pummeling the crap out of the strongest of the crew, by far should make brown trousers time for everyone.

    This story rocks.

But another scene makes it easy to spot the stunt double, if you're looking fast enough. In true spirit of Trek, the stunt doubles must always be quick to miss but quick to notice the mismatches.

Oh, don't get me wrong. It would have been a very odd episode had it occurred even in season two. But by the oddball making-it-up-as-we-go-along "broad-strokes-canon" standards of TNG's first season it fits in very well. And I also view it through the rose-tinted spectacles of absolutely adoring it on my first viewing at the age of ten.

Him shooting Dr Crusher just for teh lolz is really shocking for cosy 80s family viewing. Her fleeing into the corridor while on fire is a fleeting image but one that sticks in the mind. You really get the feeling with Lore that he's just incredibly dangerous and feels no guilt whatsoever about anything he's doing; perhaps the purest sociopath out of any Star Trek villain.

I'm reworking my way through the HD remasters now (just reached the "Redemption" two-parter) and ALL the stunt doubles are hilariously obvious at 1080p

Patrick Stewart in particular has a couple of absolute corkers, and that fight scene between Admiral Quinn and Riker in "Conspiracy" is laughable :guffaw:

    Good points!

As a kid, it was one of my favorites as well. The old evil twin routine rarely fails, and keep in mind I adored KARR as well... As an adult, and one who just loves to pick nits, the story's got problems - but it's certainly produced with some style. Had the production been as much of a flop as the script, imagine how fan reaction would be. TNG was definitely blessed with the director, music writer, and actors who do a lot with a messy script.

I have to wonder if the flame was accidental, but - dang - it adds a lot no matter what.

TNG season 1 was all over the map in terms of what target audience it wanted, what with "When the Bough Breaks" being as kid-friendly as it gets, then followed next week with the perfectly-timed repeat of "Justice', the one you do not want to sit little Billy and Tammy in front of to take notes and get ideas from. Especially as they don't mention cooties even once... never mind "Conspiracy" and the outright horror, albeit not atypical for late-80s thanks to Fangoria, War of the Worlds, and so on... somehow it suited WotW better and season 1 is pretty decent (the last time I'd watched it).

But, yeah, Lore is definitely a dangerous force and he's told well. Unlike the adults and Wonderboy Wesley, where the latter is artificially propped up, in part by writing the former as being artificially dumbed down as a gaggle of twits for the sole sake of propping up the kid. Season 2 would finally address the issues and give him some fallibility while letting him, as well as the others, have a modicum of intellect...

With TOS, it's too easy, even with SD resolution. TNG was better, but they still continued the lovely trend. :D

Oh, big time. In concept it's a cool scene, but the stunt double stands out so badly that the only way to make him blend in better is to change his uniform into a neon orange variety...
