My first guess is that it's another TATV-style holodeck reenactment of some of Pike's Enterprise missions that Boimler and Mariner are running. Hopefully it will play out better than TATV did.
Hmm... Very good point - forgot about that. For some reason I got it in my head that this was going to be an LDS episode late in the upcoming 3rd season. My bad... Well, then, I suspect the best bet is that it's the standard timey-wimey shenanigans that normally ensue in the occasional episode.

Yeah, it's obvious now! But for some reason I at first associated them with some kind of mind control device, then tried to remember all instances such devices were used all over Trek. And so inadvertently ruling out them being mere hats. Man, keeping track of the lore isn't getting any easier, for me at least, haha!
