Spoilers The Orville: New Horizons Season 3 Discussion

Agreed that this was yet another long episode that didn't feel padded. They are making very good use of the hour plus format.

Peter Macron really hit it out of the park in this one, esp in the speech to the council. I was seriously reminded of the Worf/Troi dynamic with Bortus/Kelly, but ultimately they don't seem to be going in the romantic direction of the former.

I was also reminded of Worf's revenge on Duras in the scene where he was about to kill the torturer, except he eventually held back when ordered to stop.

What a turnaround for Klyden. Chad Coleman also did a great job in this episode.

The Heveena scene in the "holodeck" was awesome. Super cool that they got her to do an appearance.

The council finally being done with the Moclan "bullshit" was a nice turn of events. I only hope we get more than the rest of this season to deal with the fallout from this.

On a related note:
Hoping the stick the landing in the final 2 episodes of season 3 - whether it's the final season or not remains TBD/TBA.
S3 has easily been my favorite so far (not because of production quality which I never minded, but room and time to breath for characters/stories, as well as so many arcs from earlier seasons continued/closed/paying off)

Question:
Assuming they stick the landing in a for you satisfactory way - would you prefer the show to "end" or are you hoping for a continuation that could be many years ahead (since the cast/crew is no longer under contract and not all might be back)?

 

I would like to see a season 4. I feel like the show has really found its voice now and is at its best. If they end now, I feel like it will be one of those shows that was cancelled too soon.

 

If it's only 10 episodes (despite the length of the eps), I'm definitely hoping for a S4. It doesn't feel like they can wrap up the Kaylon and Krill storylines in 2 more episodes, not to mention any other character type episodes they may want to do.

 

The Topa parts really frustrated me to the point of not liking this episode at all.

I strongly disagree with showing children getting tortured or being victims of such violence on screen. WTH? and Why? is it all for the shock factor? Or because the sight of a beaten child can be the only reason to kick Moclans out of the Union? that is lazy and lame writing. We talk about the same union that didn't give a frak when Topa wanted to become a girl again. Nice Union...

 

wow that was a mighty fine episode of Orville. Probably my favourite yet.

It's impactful, and there's nothing wrong with showing it, show, don't tell. It's more emotional this way, resonates better with an audience to see something happen than to just have it described, same with showing the results to the Union council. A visual is a lot more impactful than words.

 

I know why they did it, I just don't agree with it. Why the viewer to need to see it in graphic details? It should be shocking enough to know it is happening. Why on earth the need to watch it?

 

I get that it was hard to watch. But maybe it was to hammer the point home (no pun intended). By actually seeing the torture, the audience will have a stronger emotional response. We will hate that Moclan for what he did to the daughter, more than if we were just told about it. And we feel the emotion of Bortus when he rescues his daughter and beats the crap out of the bad guy. It basically becomes more real to the audience. We also got to see the extremes that the Moclan will go to because of their "social values". It is one thing to be told that the Moclans are bad because they are bigoted towards females, it's quite another to see that they will torture a little girl and planned to murder her in order to protect their male dominance. And it makes the point as to why the Union finally said "enough is enough!" and kicked the Moclan out.

 

Because it was important to the story.

 

Gordon's outburst made me think of Christianity.

That was really a great episode.

It dragged a bit in the first third i have to say but picked up speed after it until i was glued to the screen. So many powerful scenes in this - the torture ( i'm not sure i see it that often that a show or movie has the balls to depict child torture), her appearance before the council, Klyden breaking down and admitting he was wrong but above all i adore the sequence when Dolly sings, that was so well arranged and executed i had to rewatch it immediately after the episode ended.

The Union expelling Moclus for this is also the kind of fantasy i sometimes need because i wish our current political leadership would have the strength and courage to make such big and right decisions when it was time, yes it is risky but i believe we'd be better off if they did.

I was ready to give up on the show after a few episodes into the season - it was a bit uneven in quality, no humor that characterized Orville for me but episode by episode they have improved and now i'm looking forward to each new one.

 

It shows that for all their concern about "the children," bigots and fundamentalists do not truly give a damn. They will use children as a means to an end, and then dispose of them once that has been accomplished.

This was a terrific episode. Best one of the season. Seth has a great thing going here, and I hope there's a season 4.

I did notice they used images of the earth's moon and mars to make the moons of the The Sanctuary colony

 

Something about the all female Moclan colony made me think of something. Can Moclan women lay eggs like men to create new children? I do forget some of the details from the season 1 episode but I recall Bortus laying a egg and then having to sit on it to keep it warm. Has it been established that female Moclans can lay eggs as well?

 

I thought it was a nice callback to the start of the episode when Gordon says Topa is like a sister to him when he has his outburst against the Moclan. Gordon also tells Topa that she is like a sister when she tries to ask him out at the start of the episode. It showed what a nice guy Gordon is. He does see Topa like a sister and defends her.

 

Every episode this season felt padded out except for this week’s episode. Every scene felt important. There were no side plots either to slow things down or unnecessary CGI stuff.

Moclans don’t let the door it you on the ass on your way out. Enough of your bullshit.

 

I forget: what is the reason exactly why the Union needed Moclus? They mention they need weapons to help fight the Kaylons. But does Moclus have some unique resource that is used to make a certain weapon, or is Moclus really good at building weapons? At the end of this ep, I think the admiral says that the Union will just have to get by without Moclus. I could see it being an issue if Moclus had some unique resource that is needed to make a certain weapon that is not available anywhere else. But if it was just that Moclus was good at building weapons, I would imagine the Union has good engineers that could design and build good weapons too.

 

Hopefully that’s the end of the Moclan stories. They’ve been done to death.
